Al Qaeda founder and leader Osama bin Laden warned in a letter written to a colleague more than a decade ago not to target then-Vice President Joe Biden for assassination and instead concentrate on then-President Barack Obama because his death would thrust Biden into the presidency and “lead the U.S. into a crisis.”
In the newly resurfaced letter, written in May 2010, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks wrote that if Biden were to assume the presidency he would be “totally unprepared” to lead the country, which would be advantageous for al Qaeda in Afghanistan.
Thus, bin Laden instructed followers to target Obama, along with Army Gen. David Petraeus, then-commander U.S. Central Command, which oversaw the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, instead. Bin Laden said aircraft carrying them were a high priority.
Followers “are not to target visits by US Vice President Biden. The groups will remain on the lookout for Obama or Petraeus,” bin Laden wrote.
“The reason for concentrating on them is that Obama is the head of infidelity and killing him automatically will make Biden take over the presidency for the remainder of the term, as it is the norm over there,” the terrorist leader continued.
“Biden is totally unprepared for that post, which will lead the US into a crisis,” bin Laden predicted.
“As for Petraeus, he is the man of the house in this last year of the war, and killing him would alter the war’s path,” he added.
Reports said that the letter was found among a trove of other documents in bin Laden’s Pakistan-based hideout after U.S. forces raided and killed him on May 2, 2011. Written between 2006 and 2011, the documents are available to the public via the Combatting Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Post.
The resurfacing of the letter containing bin Laden’s prediction comes as Biden, now president, is under fire for botching the withdrawal of U.S. troops and other Americans from Afghanistan amid a lightning takeover of the country by the Taliban after nearly 20 years.
U.S. diplomatic personnel have been evacuated, but thousands of Americans and Afghan allies who assisted U.S. forces or worked on American and NATO bases remain behind, though Biden has pledged to evacuate them.
On Friday, according to reports, three Army CH-47 Chinook helicopters airlifted 169 Americans out of the country as 6,000 Army troops and Marines are now on the ground at the international airport in Kabul, which has been ringed by Taliban forces.
In all, U.S. forces have managed to evacuate more than 5,700 people over the past 24 hours, according to a live update page at FoxNews.com.
British and French special forces have been reportedly operating inside Kabul, away from the airport, to rescue their citizens.
Biden has received bipartisan criticism over his handling of the Afghanistan pullout, which he announced with some fanfare in April. Reports in recent days said that dozens of diplomats warned the Biden administration repeatedly that the pullout, as it was being planned, would lead to a rapid takeover by the Taliban, which is what happened.
But the White House “ignored that dire warning,” said Fox News host Sean Hannity during his Friday evening show, meaning “thousands of Americans, tens of thousands of our Afghan allies are in extreme danger.”
