Prosecutors ignore defense request for texts, other data from FBI informants in Whitmer kidnapping case

In the latest twist in the government’s case against the individuals who allegedly conspired to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, prosecutors are refusing to provide critical material to the defense that could show that the feds used entrapment methods to aid the plot.

On Friday, the attorney for one of the six men who have been indicted in the bizarre scheme requested that a federal judge order the government to turn over all communications between his client Brandon Caserta of the Wolverine Watchmen group and a paid FBI informant named “Dan” who was being instructed to recruit members, an explosive detail if true.

The attorney, Michael Hills is asking that prosecutors provide all communications between FBI agents and the informant, stating that counsel has found text messages between “Dan” and an agent who instructed him to destroy his text messages and instruct Dan to lie and accuse an innocent 3rd party of being a federal agent spy to the founder of Wolverine Watchmen.”

“These text messages indicate the F.B.I. was pushing their paid agent to actively recruit people into an overt act in furtherance of a conspiracy,” Hills wrote according to MLive.

In addition, another member of the group, Adam Fox who is described as the ringleader, is also seeking the communications of the informants who he accuses of behavior that was nearly “predatory” to advance the plot, including encouraging him to open fire on Whitmer’s summer vacation home in order to “send a message,” according to court documents obtained by Detroit NBC affiliate WDIV-4.

Prosecutors have so far refused to provide the informants’ text messages and laptops to the defense, evidence that Fox claims will prove that the FBI and its operatives “led the entire way” with ideas and training and that the informants encouraged him to recruit militia members in other states to attack governors in addition to Whitmer.

The judge has yet to rule on the requests.

The FBI’s announcement that it had broken up the plot to abduct Whitmer whose dictatorial response to COVID included some of the most draconian restrictions in the country came in the weeks prior to the 2020 presidential election and ignited a media smear campaign against supporters of former President Donald J. Trump who were falsely lumped in with violent extremists.

Then-candidate Joe Biden practically accused Trump of being behind it.

However, there have been disturbing revelations regarding the government’s involvement in the alleged plot. BuzzFeed reported that the FBI used at least 12 informants and that the feds “had a hand in nearly every aspect of the alleged plot, starting with its inception.”

Further adding to the government’s troubles is the ugly story of the FBI agent at the center of the case who was charged last month for assaulting his wife.

Special Agent Richard Trask was taken into custody by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s office as a result of the incident that stemmed from a domestic quarrel after the couple had attended a “swingers party” which his spouse did not enjoy. Trask choked her and “grabbed the side of her head and smashed it several times on the nightstand,” the altercation left her with “blood all over chest, clothing arms and hand,” according to an affidavit.

If the defense is able to get its hands on the materials and they do show that the FBI and its paid informants were the drivers of the Whitmer kidnap plot it will only further contribute to the crisis of confidence in the nation’s preeminent law enforcement agency that has been poisoned by politics.
