New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd offended her liberal audience after comparing former President Barack Obama and his “sophisticated” shin-dig this week to “The Great Gatsby” and Marie Antoinette.
Dowd condemned the “over-the-top” 60th birthday party bash for the former president at his posh $12 million estate as a “big, lavish, new-money party” because he “wanted to seem cool. Being cool is important to him.” She drew the comparison to the fictional but equally lavish parties Jay Gatsby had to “look cool.”
“The party crystallized the caricature of the Democratic Party that Joe Biden had to fight against to get elected,” Dowd wrote in her opinion piece published on Saturday titled, “Behold Barack Antoinette.”
“It was as far from Flint and Scranton as you can imagine: an orgy of the 1 percent – private jets, Martha’s Vineyard, limousine liberals and Hollywood whoring,” she continued.
Her critics accused her of being “jealous” she didn’t make the guest list and for being racist to dare to publish a piece that looks disfavorably on their apparent savior Obama.
Oh, Ms. Dowd. Are your feelings hurt that you weren’t invited? Or is this the *gasp* tan suit redux?

The party took place in a massive tent outside Obama’s residence with an estimated 300-400 guests where the president himself was caught on video without a mask on, dancing the night away. Although the event reportedly had a “coronavirus coordinator” and “attendees were required to take tests and submit their results to gain entry to the compound,” it appears to have been a super spreader event after all, with nearly 75 people on Martha’s Vineyard having tested positive for COVID-19 in the weeks following the birthday bash.
Of course, her critics still deny that it was a super spreader event.

Dowd also admonished the guest list. After the long list was “scaled back” due to backlash, she noted that many people that were instrumental to Obama landing in the oval office were uninvited from the party but mega stars like John Legend and Beyoncé apparently made the cut.
“We already knew Obama gravitated to stars but it was disillusioning to see it on such a grand scale,” she pointed out.
Stephen Colbert, who was eighty-sixed from the guest list, later quipped that the list was downsized to “only his closest Beyoncés.”
“Whether the party was 500 or 300 or 30, Obama should have made sure to have the people there who made the moment possible, the ones who worked so hard to get him elected and cement his legacy,” Dowd wrote.
“One difference is that Gatsby opened his house to the uninvited,” she explained. “Obama closed his house to many of the invited after getting flak for hosting ‘a celebrity mosh pit,’ as Stephen Colbert called it, while officials were telling people to mask back up.’”
Another New York Times reporter came under fire this week for downplaying the event, calling the soiree a “sophisticated, vaccinated crowd.”
“Other people said, you know, this has really been overblown, they’re following all the safety precautions, people are going to sporting events that are bigger than this, this is going to be safe, this is a sophisticated, vaccinated crowd and this is just about optics it’s not about safety,” Karni told CNN’s anchor Jim Acosta.
