‘I’d sit this one out’: Liz Cheney dragged for blaming Trump for Afghanistan ‘calamity’

Rep. Liz Cheney was ripped on social media and elsewhere after she suggested that former President Donald Trump shared some blame for the collapse of Afghanistan as well as President Joe Biden.

“The Trump/Biden calamity unfolding in Afghanistan began with the Trump administration negotiating with terrorists and pretending they were partners for peace, and is ending with American surrender as Biden abandons the country to our terrorist enemies,” the Wyoming Republican and noted Trump critic wrote on Twitter Saturday.

Cheney also quoted an Aug. 16, 2019 tweet she posted, which read: “The Taliban continues to support, harbor and fight alongside al Qaeda. They are not a partner for peace. Any deal that fails to prevent America’s enemies from establishing safe-havens on Afghan soil is a phony deal that threatens our security and risks another 9/11.”

Cheney’s father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, was serving under President George W. Bush when the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in October 2001, less than a month after the 9/11 terrorist attacks planned and carried out by former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, reportedly from Afghanistan (bin Laden was killed at a compound in neighboring Pakistan on May 2, 2011, by American special forces operators). More than anyone else, it is believed that he directed post-9/11 responses and was a key architect of the Afghan war and intelligence abuses.

Several users on social media blasted the Wyoming lawmaker who was one of 10 Republicans that voted to impeach then-President Donald Trump a second time following the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.

“[T]he man who said keep the oil re Iraq wouldn’t have blown the drawdown in Afghanistan like this. [Y]ou know this,” said one Twitter user.

Others noted that Trump is no longer president.

“Joe Biden is the current President of the United States, Liz,” one poster noted.

“Uh. Trump isn’t president anymore,” said another.

Others noted:

— “That calamity is a creation of your Daddy. Kindly sit your a*s down.”

— “LMAO. Your father started this damned war.”

— “With all due respect, you’ve got a lot of f**king nerve.”

— “If I were a Cheney I would sit this one out. Like, really out.”

“You must not have mirrors in your home.”

As for the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Trump administration did indeed initiate the withdrawal but had set forth a number of markers — diplomatic and security — that the Taliban had to meet before all U.S. forces were gone.

On Friday, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed those conditions, noting that the Biden administration had abandoned them, which has led to the current chaotic situation in Afghanistan.

“Looks like this was poor planning, poor leadership and that the model of deterrence that the Trump administration had in place as we prepared to bring the soldiers, sailors, Marines, everybody who’s on the ground there home — looks like they have not been able to execute this,” Pompeo told Fox News’ “The Story.”

“Big strategy depends on planning and execution. Looks like there’s a bit of panic,” said Pompeo, a West Point and Harvard Law School grad who served underTrump as CIA director as well.

“We had conditions attached to how we were thinking about this withdrawal. I was part of those negotiations,” Pompeo added.

“I was also in the room when President Trump made very clear to … the senior Taliban negotiator that if you threaten an American, if you scared an American, certainly if you hurt an American, we would bring all American power to bear to make sure that we went to your village, to your house,” the former diplomat said.

“We were very clear about the things that we were prepared to do to protect American lives. And indeed, since we began those negotiations back in February 2020, there wasn’t a single American killed by the Taliban. We had established a deterrence model. I hope we haven’t lost that for the Americans who’re still on the ground there in Kabul,” he added.
