Britney Spears’ dad moves to end conservatorship as pop star strips on camera again, attorney responds

Britney Spears is closer to independence after her conservator father, Jamie Spears, made legal moves on Thursday to step down from that position, though the pop queen’s attorney sounded a cautionary note and said he intends to depose her dad at some point.

“There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate … and it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests,” say documents Jamie Spears filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday.

“Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests,” the documents continue, according to entertainment news site TMZ.

“So, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator,” the documents continued.

The court filing indicated that certain matters would need to be completed before Jamie completely turned over control back to his daughter, according to Variety.

“When these matters are resolved, Mr. Spears will be in a position to step aside,” the court documents, filed by his attorney, Vivian Thoreen, read. “But there are no urgent circumstances justifying Mr. Spears’ immediate suspension.

“Regardless of his formal title, Mr. Spears will always be Ms. Spears’ father, he will always love her unconditionally, and he will always look out for her best interests,” the documents also say.

During a segment on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Thursday evening, Fox News correspondent Trace Gallagher reported that Britney Spears’ attorney, Mathew Rosengart, called the filing “vindication,” adding that he is pleased that Jamie Spears is finally willing to step down after remaining her conservator for 13 years following a very public breakdown by his daughter.

Gallagher also noted that during that time span, Britney has engaged in repeated world concert tours and has released several albums.

“Her fans say she can take care of herself,” said Gallagher, wrapping up his report.

In a statement, Rosengart told TMZ that he is “pleased but not necessarily surprised that Mr. Spears and his lawyer finally recognize that he must be removed.” Rosengart added that they were “disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others.”

In a separate statement to entertainment trade outlet Variety, Rosengart indicated that Jamie Spears would still face scrutiny even after he steps down.

“We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future,” Rosengart said.

“In the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr. Spears should remain silent and step aside immediately,” he added.

Jamie Spears went on to lash out at Britney’s mother, Lynn Spears, saying she had little-to-no involvement at all in the conservatorship. In addition, Jamie said in court documents that Lynn had little involvement in her daughter’s life over the past 13 years and that Britney even refused to visit her mother who had checked into a psychiatric treatment facility in 2019.

The documents also say that Jamie Spears believes he saved his daughter when she was “in crisis, desperately in need of help” years ago.

“Not only was she suffering mentally and emotionally, she was also being manipulated by predators and in financial distress. Mr. Spears came to his daughter’s rescue to protect her,” the documents said.

Jamie Spears became sole conservator in 2019 after co-conservator Andrew Wallet resigned.

“In September 2019, he temporarily relinquished his powers and Jodi Montgomery became the conservator of her person, meaning she is responsible for Spears’ medical and personal well-being,” Variety added.

“Spears’ father has remained the sole conservator of her estate, managing all of her finances and making a hefty sum of her annual multi-million-dollar earnings, given that Spears has continued to record music and perform regularly, while under conservatorship,” the outlet continued.

Thursday, Britney, 39, posted a video to her Instagram page in which she removes her white crop top shirt to go topless in a post where she wrote, “Made you look,” with a two-eyes emoji.
