Heated protest erupts outside Tennessee school board meeting after Clay Travis slams mask mandates

Protests erupted outside of a Tennessee school board meeting following a speech by nationally syndicated radio host Clay Travis whose two children are students who would be affected by mask mandates in Williamson County schools.

Travis, who has an audience of millions on the nationally syndicated “Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show” that has taken over the coveted 3-hour time slot previously held by conservative talk radio legend Rush Limbaugh, shamed the local bureaucrats in a statement that was greeted by uproarious applause before the board voted to approve the mask mandates anyway.

Parents were outraged and expressed their anger at the school board, resulting in one man being escorted out by police.

Things turned ugly outside where parents appeared to threaten a pro-mask speaker in a sign of how contentious the issue has become.

Video emerged of one outraged man shouting, “We know who you are, you can live freely, but we will find you,” while another tried to calm him down.

There should be little doubt that Travis’s short but rousing speech in which he accused the board of engaging in “cosmetic theatre” fired up the crowd.

Prior to the meeting, he took to Twitter to tout the anti-mask “revolution” with a video of the enormous crowd, many of whom were unable to get into the building.

After tensions died down,  the school board issued a statement defending their decision while being dismissive to anti-mask parents: “Our parents are passionate about their children’s education, and that’s one of the reasons for our district’s success over the years. With that said, there’s no excuse for incivility. We serve more than 40,000 students and employ more than 5,000 staff members. Our families and staff represent a wide variety of thoughts and beliefs, and it is important in our district that all families and staff have the opportunity to be represented and respected. We will continue to work toward making sure all voices are heard and that all families, staff and community members feel safe sharing their opinions.”

Travis, who before taking over Limbaugh’s time slot built an audience at the popular sports website “Outkick,” has been a major critic of masks and the mass hysteria over COVID, coining the term “coronabros” to describe those who have been empowered by the authoritarian response to the virus, and the site promoted a line of merchandise mocking Dr. Anthony Fauci.

With tempers flaring as children are now returning to classrooms and being made to mask up, it is likely that the scene in Williamson County will be repeated across the nation as the Biden administration and teachers’ unions continue to apply pressure on local officials to impose the mandates.
