‘God, country, apple pie!’ Cory Booker’s animated response to anti-defund police dialed up to 11

Sen. Cory Booker delivered a colorful, high-energy response to an amendment to the controversial $1.2 trillion infrastructure spending legislation against defunding police offered by his Republican colleague from Alabama, Sen. Tommy Tuberville.

“Madam President! I am so excited! This is perhaps the highlight of this long and painful and torturous night. This is a gift,” an animated Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, began.

“If it wasn’t [a] complete abdication of Senate procedures and esteem, I would walk over there and hug my colleague from Alabama,” he continued.

“And I will tell you right now, thank God, because there are some people who’ve said that there are members of this deliberative body that want to defund the police, to my horror,” Booker continued, sounding a mocking tone.

“And now, this senator has given us the gift of finally, once and for all, we can put to bed this scurrilous accusation that somebody in this great esteemed body would wanna defund the police,” Booker continued.

“So let’s all us – a hundred people – not walk, but sashay down there and vote for this amendment and put to rest the lies that I am sure I will see no political ads attacking anybody here over defund the police,” he continued, his voice raised.

“And I would ask unanimous consent to add something else to this obvious bill. Can we add also that every senator here wants to fund the police, believes in God, country, and,” Booker said, pausing to bang the podium, “apple pie!”

As he put down his mic and walked from the podium, Booker could be heard yelling, “Voice vote! Voice vote!”

Despite Booker’s theatrics, several members of his party have directly called for — and continue to call for — defunding local police departments that they have regularly accused of being racist against persons of color, though most of those calls are coming from the party’s far-left faction.

One of them is ‘Squad’ member Rep. Cory Bush (D-Mo.), who called for defunding cops just last week even as she said she would justify spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on personal security for herself, a luxury the vast majority of Americans including her constituents cannot afford.

“I’m going to make sure I have security because I know I have had attempts on my life. And I have too much work to do; there are too many people that need help right now for me to allow that,” she told CBS.

“So if I end up spending $200,000, if I spend ten more dollars on it, you know what, I get to be here to do the work, so suck it up. And defunding the police has to happen,” she continued.

“We need to defund the police and put that money into social safety nets.”

In addition, Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Jamaal Bowman of New York have all made similar demands over the past year, even as violence and rioting gave way to dramatic increases in homicides and shootings in most major American cities.

Last month, the Republican Study Committee released a compilation video featuring Democrats — including Sens. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii and Bernie Sanders, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats — repeatedly calling for defunding police.
