Ted Cruz gears up to battle Dems with legislation: The mandates are coming … and it’s political

Sen. Ted Cruz lashed out at Democrats Monday over their support for the reimposition of mask mandates and other coronavirus-related restrictions despite recent instances where they have broken their own recommendations.

In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Cruz, a Texas Republican, also talked about legislation he was planning to introduce that would bar such restrictions because he supports “individual choice, individual responsibility,” though he added that he couldn’t get a single Democrat to sign onto his bill.

To begin the segment, Hannity said he has always taken COVID-19 seriously before repeating earlier recommendations that Americans to do their own research as well as consult with their own medical providers regarding what is best for them in terms of mitigating it.

But “I’m not a doctor, senator. I’m not gonna play one on radio or TV. I’m not qualified,” Hannity said before asking Cruz to respond.

“I think with any serious disease you have to take it seriously and you have to take reasonable precautions,” Cruz began.

“In a time of crisis, peoples’ character is revealed. The character of Democrats—whether it’s Joe Biden, whether it is Andrew Cuomo, whether it is Bill de Blasio, whether it is Gavin Newsom — the character from their perspective, they do not respect your liberty,” he continued.

“They do not respect your right to make your choices about your healthcare, about your children, about your lives,” the Texan added.

“My views were very simple. There should be no mandates—zero concerning COVID. That means no mask mandates, regardless of your vaccination status. That means no vaccine mandates,” Cruz continued.

“That means no vaccine passports and I’ve introduced legislation — a bill to ban vaccine passports. This week I’m introducing a bill to ban vaccine mandates and this week I’m introducing a bill to end mask mandates,” he said.

Cruz went on to clarify that he’s not an anti-vaxxer.

“Now, that doesn’t mean, as the media likes to characterize, that I’m opposed to vaccines. I actually think vaccines are terrific,” he said.

“I’ve taken the vaccine. My family has taken the vaccine, but I believe in individual choice, individual responsibility,” the Republican senator added.

“You can make the choice for your family. These mandates are coming and … what they’re talking about is political. It’s not tied to the science,” he said.

He went on to accuse Democrats of not being concerned about whether Americans who choose not to get the vaccine are forced out of their jobs or are otherwise not able to fully participate in society.

“Their view is, ‘Tough for you,'” Cruz said. “It would be different if we were dealing with the zombie apocalypse where anyone who came near this was dropping dead.

“But they know what they’re saying is nonsense,” Cruz continued, pointing out the hypocrisy of Barack Obama’s 60th birthday party over the weekend, which was attended by hundreds of maskless people including the 44th president himself.

“When they’re alone, the Democrats demonstrate [that] they think all of this is nonsense. They take off their masks and then they party like it’s 1999. They know this is a crock,” he said, going on to explain that Senate Democrats routinely unmask around the chamber but will put a mask on when there is a news camera in the vicinity.

Later, Cruz explained that no Democrats were supporting his legislation, going on to explain that initially, he had a commitment from Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) to co-sponsor legislation to end mask mandates on commercial flights, but the latter changed his mind after the Texas Republican said Schatz’s Democratic colleagues talked him out of it.
