An unsettling report out of La Joya, Texas states that COVID-positive illegal immigrants have been removed from law enforcement custody and grouped together in hotels paid for by a local charity group.
Authorities were informed that the organization Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley had booked the rooms surreptitiously after somehow securing the release of the illegals.
Word had quickly spread after employees at a local Whataburger became alarmed by a group of illegal immigrants exhibiting signs of the coronavirus while dining inside the restaurant. After noticing this, an unidentified third party waved down a passing patrol officer who was then informed by the manager of the restaurant that he wished the visibly ill group to leave.
Upon inspecting the scene, the patrol officer found the group to be sneezing and coughing, with none in the group wearing masks, although the city does not have a mask mandate.
The group informed the officer that they had been apprehended days earlier by Border Patrol agents and were recently released.
Although they all admitted to testing positive for the coronavirus, none had any documentation stating that fact.
“We did not know this,” said La Joya police Sgt. Manuel Casas. “No one told the city of La Joya. No one told the police department that these people were here and no one told us that these people were possibly ill.”
The group of migrants at the Whataburger informed the officer on the scene that they were staying at a nearby motel, the Texas Inn and Suites.
Upon investigation at the hotel in question, Sgt. Casas said in a statement, “We have an understanding based on what was told to us that the hotel in totality has already been rented out,” he continued, “The information we have is that everyone that is staying in that hotel is COVID-19 positive because it’s being rented out for them.”
An employee at the Texas Inn and Suites who declined to give his name dubiously stated that he had no idea how many migrants were at the hotel, adding, “There are so many people trying to help. We don’t have any problems here (with COVID-19).”
The hotel is rented to capacity.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol released a statement to Fox News, saying that the Rio Grande Valley has been enduring “significant numbers of undocumented migrants crossing the border.”
An agency spokesperson added, “During these challenging times, our federal, state, and local partnerships are indispensable as we work to secure our borders and to quickly move individuals out of USBP custody and through the appropriate immigration pathway.”
Concern is likely to be amplified among law enforcement and citizens, both in and outside of La Joya, as the COVID-positive illegal immigrants cannot be detained and are free to navigate the country with impunity, potentially infecting any number of unwitting Americans as they move about.
