House Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated on Sunday she is likely to name Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), another outspoken foe of former President Donald Trump, to her Jan. 6 committee.
During an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” the California Democrat said she had no plans to make any announcements about it on Sunday because she needed to speak first with Kinzinger, but she added “you could say that’s the direction I would be going” when asked about naming him to the panel.
If Kinzinger accepts, he would become the second Republican to sit on an otherwise Democrat-dominated panel; another Trump opponent, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, has already been appointed to the panel.
When host George Stephanopoulos asked if Pelosi planned to add more GOP members to the panel, she responded, “That would be my plan.”

“I’m not about to announce it right this minute, but you could say that that is the direction that I would be going on,” Pelosi said, adding that Kinzinger and other Republicans have “expressed an interest” in sitting on the select panel.

Kinzinger and Cheney are two of 10 Republicans that voted to impeach Trump an unprecedented second time in January following the breach of the U.S. Capitol Building. Trump has vowed to campaign on behalf of their primary challengers next year.
Talk of appointing another anti-Trump Republican comes after Pelosi rejected two of five GOP panel nominees named by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last week — Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana, both of whom are staunch allies of the former president. After Pelosi rejected them, McCarthy pulled all five nominees, claiming Pelosi is simply trying to stack the panel with Trump opponents from both parties ahead of an eventual ‘finding’ that he was to blame for the Capitol protest.
Meanwhile, McCarthy signaled last week that he is considering removing Cheney from a congressional panel, the Armed Services Committee, because of her decision to sit on Pelosi’s Jan. 6 committee.
During his weekly presser on Friday, McCarthy said that the GOP caucus’ first priority and “main focus” is pushing back on what he said was damage to the country being caused by Democratic policies, going on to reference spikes in crime around the country, the chaotic and open U.S. border, and rising inflation.
But when asked about Cheney’s future on the Armed Services Committee, he said: “I think it’s a conference decision. The conference will look at it.”
In May, the GOP caucus ousted Cheney from her role as chair of the House Republican Conference, the party’s third-ranking position, replacing her with Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York. Some Republican lawmakers said it wasn’t so much Cheney’s vote to impeach Trump as it was her continual pushback against many of his ‘America First’ policies that are so popular with a vast majority of GOP voters.
“I’m truly honored and humbled to earn your support to serve as our Republican Conference Chair,” Stefanik said after becoming conference chair. “I know we are all here to serve the people, the voters who place their trust and faith in us. You have put yours in me to serve this Conference and I will never lose sight of that. I will always work my very hardest to earn your trust every day.”
“This will not be an easy job, but I know we are stronger when united as a team,” she added.
