Conservative podcaster and bestselling author Candace Owens ripped the Biden administration’s Department of Education for promoting an activist group’s handbook pushing critical race theory and anti-white rhetoric.
Owens was responding to reports that the Education Department included information about the Abolitionist Teaching Network in materials aimed at helping public schools around the country reopen after being closed to in-person instruction for more than a year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The link was part of suggestions from the department about how schools should spend funds acquired through the American Rescue Plan, a coronavirus relief measure President Joe Biden signed earlier this year.
The Abolitionist Teaching Network’s materials incorporate language that is associated with the highly controversial critical race theory, and that includes the handbook promoted by the Education Department.
“Abolitionist Teachers” should “[b]uild a school culture that engages in healing and advocacy. This requires a commitment to learning from students, families, and educators who disrupt Whiteness and other forms of oppression,” says the group in the guide.
One of the network’s co-founders can be seen in a webinar saying, “I want us to be feared.” The materials in the group’s handbook that the Education Department cited calls on teachers to “disrupt Whiteness.”
A spokesperson from the department told Fox News that including the link to the network’s handbook “was an error.”
But Owens wasn’t buying that explanation. She believes the group’s guide was added intentionally and that the administration “got caught red-handed.”
“Listen, the Biden administration got caught red-handed and I want to be very clear about what their intentions are because we all know that Joseph Biden does not care about,” Owens told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham.
“His record when he was a senator tells us everything we need to know about him and his opinion of black people. And his true opinion of black Americans is that we are the dumbest part of the population,” she added.
“He believes that black Americans are the easy pawns. This administration believes that if they keep stoking racial tensions, they can turn black Americans into their permanent soldiers for their policies. And what they’re really trying to do is replace hard academics,” Owens continued.
“I’m talking about engineering, mathematics, all that stuff is now a form of white supremacy. They don’t want kids to get the right answer. They want them to focus on, you said it Laura, emotional learning,” Owens went on. “Because emotional learning is not rational learning.
“People that learn emotionally don’t tend to go off and become successful individuals. Rather people who learn emotionally tend to become angry, radical and Antifa-throwing BLM-burning individuals and those people are very easily targeted by the government and that’s what the Biden administration wants,” she said.
Other Republicans also ripped the inclusion of the network’s handbook.
“This is another major flip flop from the Biden administration,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) told Fox News in a statement. “If Biden truly does not support Critical Race Theory, he will publicly call on teachers’ unions to stop pushing this propaganda on our unsuspecting children.”
“I’ve demanded the [National Education Association] halt efforts to target and surveil opponents of this Marxist ideology,” she added.
House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik of New York also blasted the administration.
“President Biden has spent his first six months in office working to enact the Far-Left’s divisive and radical agenda. So, it’s not surprising that Biden’s Department of Education was actively pushing a radical pro-CRT group’s handbook in their guidance for school reopening,” she said in a statement.
“Families across America are outraged at the Biden and radical Democrat agenda dividing our communities by forcing CRT on our kids,” she said.
The Biden administration quickly walked back its support of the controversial material following intense backlash.
