Mom pushed down subway stairs during robbery in critical condition; NYPD hunts suspect

The NYPD has launched a manhunt for a suspected backpack thief who allegedly caused a mother and her son to tumble down the stairs as they were exiting a Manhattan subway station.

First responders rushed the woman, an immigrant from Myanmar (Burma) to the hospital, where she underwent brain surgery after suffering a severe head injury and is reportedly in critical condition. The incident is also under investigation as a potential hate crime. Her son only suffered minor injuries.

The tragic incident occurred Saturday morning as the victims, identified by multiple media outlets as Than Htwe, 58, and Kyaw Zaw Hein, 22, were leaving the station.

The suspect allegedly grabbed Hein’s backpack, and as he was sent backward, Hein reportedly reached out for his mother, and they both fell. The suspect then fled the scene.

The NYPD News Twitter account released surveillance video of the suspect at the crime with a request for the public’s help via the confidential tip line in locating him.

“WANTED for ATTEMPTED ROBBERY: On 7/17 at 9:40 AM, inside the Canal St “N” subway station in Manhattan, the suspect tried to forcibly remove a bag, causing two victims to fall down the stairs, leaving one victim in critical condition.”

If a video exists of the actual attempted robbery, it has yet to be released to the public.

Kyaw Zaw Hein and his family released the following statement about the subway attack to the New York Daily News:

I love my mom very much & miss her so much, hopefully she can give me a hug soon. Because of this monster action, my mom is in grave danger, hooked up to so many machines in ICU and the doctor said she’s not looking well & may not be able to pull through.

My family is in shock and hope the police will catch whoever responsible for the incident and get justice that my mom deserved. Please, if anyone recognize the person, let the police know so there won’t be any more victims like me.

Hein separately described his mother, a Buddhist, as a very kind, religious person who came to America for her son’s education. “Even if people are bad, she treats them well. She just goes on with her life,” he noted.

A nearby vendor described what he witnessed in the immediate aftermath of the attempted robbery, the New York Post reported.

“I saw the guy holding the lady’s hand and he was screaming for help. There was a lot of blood coming out of her head. Her son was screaming for help and I went over there to see what was happening. I got the officers.”

Crime, including random violence against those of Asian heritage, has surged in New York City under far-left, term-limited Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Democrat primary winner Eric Adams, de Blasio’s likely successor and a former police captain and Brooklyn borough president, has vowed, however, to crack down on street crime.
