Acosta pushes in with Dems, hits Biden for not backing effort to kill filibuster, warns of ‘next’ insurrection

CNN host Jim Acosta ripped President Joe Biden on Saturday for his continued refusal to publicly back some Democratic efforts to get rid of the Senate filibuster rule which requires 60 votes to move legislation amid what he called threats to the country’s democratic processes as red states pass voter integrity laws following the chaotic and controversial 2020 election.

Acosta opened the segment with a clip of Biden talking about “the big lie and the insurrection,” the phrase Democrats use when discussing former President Donald Trump’s claims the election was stolen, along with their false characterization of the Jan. 6 Capitol protest.

The CNN host then chastised Biden for telling Americans they “should be alarmed” about “democracy” while refusing to back the elimination of the filibuster so Democrats can pass an equally controversial national voter reform bill that would override several existing voting rules and laws across the country.

“‘You should be alarmed’ the president said. Yet the president did not offer support for removing the legislative blockade in Congress — the filibuster — that’s standing in the way of laws that would safeguard our elections,” Acosta told viewers. “The president appears to be holding out some hope he can work with Republican leaders Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).”

“Maybe that could happen on infrastructure. But a new bridge is not going to protect the Capitol. It’s more like the GOP has a bridge to sell you,” he continued, adding that McCarthy met recently with “the insurrectionist-in-chief, Donald Trump.”

“Apparently they spoke about the upcoming midterms, or as some of Trump’s allies may have on their calendar, the next insurrection,” he said, mockingly, adding, “Trump is still lying about the last election,” before playing a clip of the former president speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas last week.

“Given Trump’s love for lies like that,” referencing the former president’s assertion that there was “such love” on Jan. 6, “delivering a speech about saving democracy without passing tough laws to protect elections is not going to be enough,” Acosta said. “To paraphrase the movie ‘The Untouchables,’ it’s like bringing a knife to an insurrection.”

The CNN host who has been regularly booed and savaged at pro-Trump and pro-Republican events, went on to discuss Trump’s responses last week to revelations in an upcoming book that Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley allegedly expressed concerns that the then-president was planning on using the military to stage a coup to remain in office, which Trump has flatly rejected.

“Trump did respond in a statement saying if I was going to do a coup, one of the last people I would want to do it with is General Mark Milley,” Acosta said, calling it “very OJ Simpson.”

“Sounds like Simpson’s book, If I Did It,’” Acosta continued. “Can somebody let us know if Trump is spotted in a white Ford Bronco this weekend on the run with Rudy Giuliani? Perhaps they’ll be heading for the Four Seasons Landscaping company.”

To close, Acosta came back to his original complaint — that Biden should back ending the filibuster because “democracy is still being threatened.”

“The current president says American democracy is still being threatened,” said Acosta. “Yes, it is being threatened by the former guy.

“As Jim Malone would ask, what are you prepared to do?” he continued, again referencing a scene in The Untouchables.

“What is law enforcement prepared to do about Trump’s actions surrounding January 6th? What are Democrats prepared to do to protect our elections? What are you, the voter, prepared to do to hold accountable those politicians who choose Trump over American democracy?”
