Ex-DHS staffer and ‘Anonymous’ author claims GOP bigger security threat to America than al-Qaeda, ISIS

A former Department of Homeland Security staffer who was the “Anonymous” author behind a sensationalized account of the Trump administration published by The New York Times declared that the Republican Party and its tens of millions of members and supporters are akin to terrorist groups like ISIS and al Qaeda and constitute the gravest threat to the country in decades.

Former DHS official Miles Taylor made the highly incendiary remarks during an interview on MSNBC this week, part of his ongoing, frequent critiques of former President Donald Trump, his administration, and congressional Republicans who support him.

“I gotta believe in Donald Trump’s mind there was a scenario where he could deploy the United States military in such a way to deny Joe Biden from taking office,” Taylor said, following reports earlier this week that a new book by two Washington Post reporters claimed that Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley feared the former commander-in-chief would try to stage a “coup” following his apparent election defeat.

“That was the fear I had a year before the election, it was a fear I had in the days after the election,” Taylor, who appeared alongside ‘Russiagate’ conspiracy theorist Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), continued.

After noting that he’s never been a political operative or worked on a campaign “except when I was campaigning against Trump,” Taylor said he’s “a national security guy” who has “worked in national security against ISIS and al Qaeda and Russia,” while conspicuously failing to mention China, which the Pentagon has said for years is the United States’ most serious threat.

But, he continued, “the number one national security threat that I’ve ever seen in my life to this country’s democracy is that party that I’m in, the Republican Party,” the 34-year-old said.

“It is the No. 1 national security threat to the United States of America, and I’ll tell ya this: If my party retakes the U.S. House of Representatives in the next cycle, it’s going to become a haunted house, and the ghoul and the specter haunting that House is going to be Donald Trump,” Taylor charged without any pushback from the MSNBC host.

He went on to speculate that if House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) takes over as Speaker in a new GOP majority, “it’s really going to be Donald Trump’s hand on the Speaker’s gavel.”

McCarthy reportedly met with Trump at the former president’s Bedminster, N.J., golf club earlier this week.

“If Kevin McCarthy continues to pay homage to a twice-impeached presidential loser, I think should give all Americans pause and make them worry about the future of this country.”

Earlier after a meeting, McCarthy said Trump pledged to help the GOP retake the House. The former president has also said he will work to help the party regain control of the Senate as well.

Taylor has a history of making unsubstantiated and outrageous claims about Trump.

In August 2020, he claimed during a CNN interview that he regularly heard while serving as chief of staff to then-Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s concerns about Trump’s mental state.

“It’s easy to make light of this. You know, the Internet is flooded with memes of really funny instances of Donald Trump showing less than great mental acuity, but this was discussed often, daily among the senior advisers and the cabinet,” Taylor claimed.

Trump would go on to pass a strict mental acuity exam, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a 30-point test serving as an indicator of potential memory problems. The former White House physician who administered it, now-freshman Rep. Ronnie Jackson (R-Texas), has called on Democrats to insist that President Joe Biden take the same test amid growing concerns about his mental status.
