A voter integrity organization founded by former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell plans to file Freedom of Information Act requests to force California elections boards to produce information regarding their voter registration rolls in an effort to identify any that are outdated.
The FOIA requests will be filed through Fix California, Grenell told Fox News on Saturday before he spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas, which began last week and ends on Sunday.
Grenell said that his organization is working on behalf of California conservatives over the long haul so they feel like they have a say in the state’s Democrat-dominated political environment.
“What we’ve got to be able to do is let people know that their vote matters, that every vote counts, and we’ve got to get them more engaged,” Grenell told the network, adding that his organization will file lawsuits against every California county if need be to obtain access to voter registration rolls.
“What we saw in this last election was really frightening,” Grenell continued. “It’s one of the problems that we have is that the Democrat liberal-left groups that run California have all demanded that people get a ballot regardless of whether or not they’re still in the state.
“So the county voter registration offices are literally taking old voting rolls and sending ballots to every single person that’s still on the voting rolls,” he noted further.
In January 2019, conservative legal group Judicial Watch won a lawsuit that forced California to remove up to 1.5 million people from its voter registration rolls so the state came back into compliance with federal law.
Filed in 2017, the suit demanded that Los Angeles County and the remainder of the state remove the names of voters who had been inactive for two straight elections, as required under provisions of the National Voter Registration Act.
“Los Angeles County has a registration rate of 112 percent of its adult citizen population,” Judicial Watch said in a statement after the organization signed a settlement agreement with the Golden State. “The entire State of California has a registration rate of about 101 percent of its age-eligible citizenry.”
“The new settlement agreement, filed today with U.S. District Court Judge Manuel L. Real, requires all of the 1.5 million potentially ineligible registrants to be notified and asked to respond,” Judicial Watch added. “If there is no response, those names are to be removed as required by the NVRA.”
Grenell’s organization is set to continue pressing California elections officials to clean up their rolls. Specifically, Fix California seeks to compare official voter registration rolls with the organization’s own “extensive data file.” He said that will allow the group to find out “where state officials have failed their legal obligations to protect the voice and vote of Californians.”
The former acting DNI and U.S. Ambassador to Germany also made comments about the ongoing recall of Gov. Gavin Newsom, pushing back on polling data suggesting that the Democratic governor is in a good position to survive the initiative.
“First of all, I don’t believe any polls that say people are satisfied with Gavin Newsome’s leadership. I can tell you unequivocally the majority of Californians are not,” Grenell claimed.
“Now, that’s not to say that the recall is a slam dunk. What we have to be able to do is remind people of Gavin Newsom’s leadership,” Grenell went on.
“Just today, for instance, Gavin Newsom has announced that we have to conserve more water because we have a drought. This is ridiculous. We live on the ocean. The last thing that Californians should be worried about is water,” he said.
Grenell went on to address what he thought parents could do to avoid having their children exposed to the highly controversial and racially divisive critical race theory.
“We’ve just spent a year where parents across the country and I can tell you parents in California have watched their kids be taught through Zoom school,” he told Fox News.
“And what that really meant is parents had a peek into the classroom. They’re outraged as to what’s being taught,” Grenell added. “And parents of all stripes are literally trying to say ‘how do we upend education. How do we make sure that it’s not just government run schools. We have to have school choice.”
He suggested that choice would turn primary education into a free market solution, noting that “schools should be competing against each other for students.”
Under the current status quo of having mostly public schools as the only option, “most people who can’t afford it are forced to go to the crappy school down the street.”
