Sen. Marsha Blackburn suggested during a lengthy interview published earlier this week that pop superstar Taylor Swift would become one of the first victims of “Marxism” if the political ideology took hold in the U.S. because such regimes always punish success and redistribute wealth.
In addition, the Tennessee Republican said that under a more authoritarian government, Swift would have to get her songs and attire approved by official monitors and censors and would not be free to choose her own style and content.
Blackburn, who sat for the interview in the country music epicenter of Nashville, made her comments in the context of how left-wing influencers are in the process of attempting to change the genre, which historically has attracted more conservatives and appealed more to Middle America, and make it more “woke.”
Swift got her start in country music before transiting to pop.
“When you talk about country music, and I know the left is all out now and trying to change country music and make it woke,” Blackburn told Breitbart News. “When I’m talking to my friends who are musicians and entertainers, I say, ‘If we have a socialistic government—if we have Marxism—you are going to be the first ones who will be cut off because the state would have to approve your music.’”
She went on to acknowledge her long-running political feud with Swift.
“Taylor Swift came after me in my 2018 campaign,” Blackburn said, when the entertainer backed her Democratic opponent, former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen. “But Taylor Swift would be the first victim of that because when you look at Marxist socialistic societies, they do not allow women to dress or sing or be on stage or to entertain or the type music she would have.”

“They don’t allow protection of private intellectual property rights,” she continued, a reference to Swift’s being able to claim rights to and own her own music and brands.
Initially, as Breitbart News noted, Swift was apolitical, at least publicly, but she turned towards Democrats as she became a pop icon, and become more vocally and publicly supportive of left-wing causes, and that has included Swift going after Blackburn personally, once referring to her as “Trump in a wig.”
Blackburn responded in a January 2020 statement by calling Swift an “exceptionally gifted artist and songwriter” and adding that “Nashville is fortunate to be the center of her creative universe.”
“While there are policy issues on which we may always disagree, we do agree on the need to throw the entertainment community’s collective influence behind legislation protecting songwriters, musicians, and artists from censorship, copyright theft, and profiteering,” Blackburn said at the time.
Continuing in her interview with Breitbart, Blackburn noted that while entertainers in the country music industry and others continue tilting “to the left” in their ideology, it is conservative and Republican policies that allow them to continue being successful — citing the example of Mikhail Baryshnikov, a famous Russian dancer who defected from the former Soviet Union to come to the U.S.
“Take Baryshnikov who left Russia and escaped, a great story of pushing to find freedom and wanting to come to the United States to find the American dream—why did he do that?” Blackburn told Breitbart.
“He did it because he knew he would always be beholden to the Communist Party and to the Soviet system if he was in Russia,” she continued. He would not have the unlimited creative expression that we enjoy because we have a First Amendment that allows free speech,” she added.
“We recognize an individual’s right to create. It is a Constitutional guarantee. Article I Section 8 Clause 8, you can benefit from your creations,” she said.
Marsha Blackburn’s name trended for hours on Twitter for her comments on Swift, as leftists ripped the senator for being ignorant.
Marsha Blackburn appears to be confusing socialism with Sharia. Is there an IQ test you have to fail to be a Republican politician? https://t.co/pMLxE7U5a0
