Photo of Biden on one knee bowing in meeting with outgoing Israeli president got lost in US media mix

President Joe Biden met with Israel President Reuven Rivlin last week at the White House and a photo of the American president kneeling before Rivlin and his bureau chief, Rivka Ravitz, appeared to get lost in the mix.

At least, it did in the American media. Israeli media reported on what turned out to be a playful moment, with Biden dropping to his knee in deference to Ravitz after he was told the ultra-Orthodox woman has 12 children.

In what was reported to be Rivlin’s last overseas trip as president, he informed Biden that his key adviser runs a household of 13 in addition to her demanding job, Haaretz reported, and was caught by surprise when Biden knelt before her.

“Rivlin clasped his hands in apparent surprise as he and Ravitz looked down on Biden, who lowered one knee to the floor and bowed his head” the Israeli newspaper reported.

Mishpacha Magazine’s Yossi Elituv posted two photographs on Twitter.

The tweet translates to: “Finally, something that truly meets the definition of the sanctification of God. President Biden kneels in honor of the ultra-Orthodox Rebecca Ravitz, who combines two important careers: a mother of 12 children, and the head of the outgoing staff at the President’s House. Ravitz will continue to sail far. @YediotAhronot”

Ravitz, whose father was born in the U.S.  began working for Rivlin in 1999, Haaretz noted. She studied to be a teacher in Jerusalem and became a parliamentary aide to the late Avraham Ravitz, a lawmaker in the Israel parliament and her father-in-law.

As for their meeting, the White House said Biden “conveyed his unwavering support for Israel’s security and his commitment to deepening the cooperation between the two countries across all fields.”

The U.S. president also assured Rivlin that Iran would “never get a nuclear weapon” under his watch.

“The leaders discussed the many challenges facing the region, including the threat posed by Iran,” the statement continued. “The President emphasized that under his administration, Iran will never get a nuclear weapon. He also assured President Rivlin that the United States remains determined to counter Iran’s malign activity and support for terrorist proxies, which have destabilizing consequences for the region.”

Interesting, given the success of the previous administration in brokering such deals, Biden “expressed his strong support for the normalization of relations between Israel and other countries in the Arab and Muslim world,” the release added.

Equally interesting is that when Biden posed for a photo with the 2020 World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers, he was again on his knee.

It’s not clear why he opted to kneel on a platform while everyone else, to include Vice President Kamala Harris, was standing:
