Former Republican strategist Matthew Dowd claimed Tuesday that the Jan. 6 protest, which saw one police-caused death and relatively minor damage to the U.S. Capitol Building, is on par with the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans.
In addition, in an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Reid Out,” Dowd told host Joy Reid that on the six-month anniversary of the Capitol protest, he feels like the United States is on the cusp of another civil war and that the best thing to do would be for Americans to rid themselves of the Republican Party, which was founded, in part, to end slavery.
After the host complained about the country being mostly “white” and “Christian,” Dowd agreed, adding that he believes tensions in the country are “much worse” than they were in November, following the presidential election, and Jan. 6.
“It’s much worse than it was in November. It’s much worse after January 6th,” Dowd said, adding that the reason is “because there’s been no accountability, it’s given permission to do more” acts of violence, though Trump supporters have not engaged in a similar type of protest like that which took place at the Capitol earlier this year.

Dowd then referenced “the big lie,” the phrase Democrats and left-wing pundits use to describe the belief among some Republican voters that former President Donald Trump actually won the November election.
“And not only is it given permission to just average people out there who might do crazy things, it’s allowed the Republicans just to continue this big lie that they’ve pushed across,” he continued.
“I was…yesterday I was in Kentucky. I decided to go to Lincoln’s birthplace and his boyhood home, and I was reflecting about it because one of the things Lincoln said was, ‘America will never be destroyed from outside, America will destroy itself.’ And I think that’s what I fear about right now,” Dowd continued.
“And one of the things, if you think about this, what would happen if after 9/11 we had done nothing? We had done nothing? Think about that, if we had done nothing after 9/11. And to me, though there was less loss of life on January 6th, January 6th was worse than 9/11 because it’s continued to rip our country apart and give permission for people to pursue autocratic means,” Dowd added.
Since the Jan. 6 protest, majority Democrats have militarized the Capitol, increased the administration’s focus on so-called “domestic terrorists,” and, last week moved to create a partisan “1/6 Commission.”
“So, I think we’re in a much worse place than we’ve been, and as I’ve said — I think to you — before, I think we’re in the most perilous point in time since 1861 and the advent of the Civil War,” Dowd continued.
Reid agreed with his assessment, adding that it “frightens me.”
“You know what scares me the most, Matthew, is that I’m not sure that most Democrats, at least elected Democrats in Washington, agree with us or are afraid as we are,” she continued before going on to false claim again that the protest at the Capitol was an “attempt to overthrow the government.”
Reid went on, as she frequently does, to add a racist component to her assessment.
“…[T]o me it looks directly like fascism, it looks like Mussolini’s Italy, the brown shirts, the violence against our Capitol, the attempts to overthrow the government, the centering of white citizens that happen to be the top citizens or else the country dies,” she said before accusing the GOP of wanting that to happen.
“And to see the Republican Party, either because of cowardice or because they agree with it, say, ‘We’re going to do that. We’re going to go with that. If that’s what it takes for us to have power, then fine, we’ll take fascism,'” she said, adding: “I don’t know what you do with a country where one political party decides that and you only really have two.”
“Well, the only thing you can do is rid the country of that political party,” said Dowd.
