Exercising his right to self-defense, a California homeowner thwarted an alleged home invasion, reportedly firing two shots into the chest of a male intruder.
The suspect, who allegedly tried to smash through the front door of the residence owned by a married couple in their 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Cops allegedly found a loaded semi-automatic handgun among his possessions.
Both the suspect and the victims called 911 in the incident that occurred on Tuesday morning in an otherwise quiet neighborhood in Fairfield, Cal., in the San Francisco Bay area near Napa Valley.
After the suspect was wounded, he collapsed across the street. First responders administered CPR to no avail.
“The suspect did ultimately kick the door down, kicked it off the hinges and attempted to make entry into the house. The homeowner defended themselves, fired rounds. The suspect ended up fleeing and he obviously called us, asked for us to come and help him, ” Lt. Jausiah Jacobsen of the Fairfield PD said, according to Fox 40 Sacramento.
The couple was having breakfast when the suspect knocked on the door. After scoping out the situation with their Ring camera and not recognizing the man, they reportedly decided against answering. That’s when the suspect, 27, allegedly tried to break in, and the homeowner used his legally owned firearm to protect himself and his wife.
The deceased man was reportedly already on parole for a similar incident that occurred in the Oakland area.

An investigation is ongoing, and cops have requested the public’s help in the probe, including any video that might exist. Detectives most likely want to try to find out why the intruder targeted this particular residence. Fairfield PD has indicated that at this point there is no known relationship between him and the victims.
It has yet to be determined if the suspect brandished a weapon during the home invasion.
Neighbors described the couple as a wonderful family who is well regarded in the local community, and the Fairfield PD victim advocate is offering assistance to them.
In two separate, recent incidents in Modesto, Calif., also near San Francisco, homeowners shot and killed intruders. Reacting to these incidents, Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness offered a possible explanation: “first, crime is up in several parts of the region. Secondly, he says more people are arming themselves and are purchasing firearms to protect themselves,” CBS 13 Sacramento reported.
About a week ago, a naked homeless man allegedly broke into an upscale Los Angeles neighborhood home in the middle of the afternoon and then proceeded to swim in the pool, shower, try on clothes, and stomp pet birds to death.

The homeowners — who were present at the time — did not engage with the intruder, who was later arrested by neighborhood security and faces burglary and animal cruelty charges.
