‘Disgraceful!’ Ohio Dems throw literal fist-pounding tantrum while female rep tries to fight for women athletes

Acting in an objectively unprofessional manner, Ohio Democrats in the state legislature literally pounded the table in an attempt to disrupt the presentation of a proposed amendment that would protect women’s sports.

Republican State Representative Jena Powell was in the process of reading the amendment on the Ohio House floor during regular order when Democrats began their tantrum to try to silence her.

“The Save Women’s Sports Act is the fairness issue for women to be able to achieve their dreams in athletics in our state, and is crucial to preserving women’s rights and the integrity of women’s and girls’ sports. Across our country, female athletes are currently losing scholarships, opportunities, medals, education, and training opportunities,” she said.

Powell maintained her composure and continued press on despite the attempted disruption of the proceedings and explained that her amendment would require the Oho High School Athletic Association to designate separate interscholastic teams on the basis of biological sex.

The amendment to the Name, Image, Likeness bill, Senate Bill 187, passed the Ohio House by a vote of 54-40 and heads to the state senate after the bill itself, as amended, passed 57-36.

Commenting on the Democrats’ misbehavior which she described as a childish outburst, Powell told the Family Research Council that “In the two and a half years that I’ve been in the legislature, that was probably one of the worst outcries that we’ve seen. It’s very rare to have something like that on the Ohio House floor, so it was very surprising.”

Powell went on to say that “When the Democrats speak, and we disagree with them, we allow them to speak, and then you have the ability to do rebuttal on the floor.” She also noted that any elected lawmaker can introduce amendments to pending bills as standard operating procedure.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who is often accused of being a RINO especially over various COVID restrictions that he imposed, appears lukewarm on the provision, but Powell implied that the GOP has enough votes to override a potential veto, if it ever comes to that.

DeWine, who is seeking reelection in 2022, has indicated that the transgender issue would be better dealt with outside of government by sports leagues and athletic associations. According to Rep. Powell, DeWine is intimidated by the woke left and woke corporations.

If passed and signed into law, SB 187 would allow Ohio college athletes to make money off the use of their names, images and likenesses. On Monday of this week, DeWine issued an executive order that would allow just that. It remains to be seen if this renders the bill moot (although an executive order lacks permanency).

Some lawmakers had prioritized the so-called “NIL” law as a key recruitment issue because similar laws in some other states considered college football powerhouses take effect today.

As such, it remains to been seen how the state senate will respond to Powell’s amendment.

According to Cleveland.com, however, “A spokesman for the Senate Republican majority said the chamber did not support the bill with the transgender sports language and believed the proposed transgender ban needed a full set of hearings.”

In a statement, Rep. Jena Powell chided the governor for bypassing the state legislature.

“His executive order, which will disproportionately benefit male athletes, does nothing to promote fairness in women’s sports. College athletes have large institutions and big money on their side. Little girls don’t — and that’s why I’m fighting so passionately for them. I fully support college athletes receiving compensation for the use of their name and likeness. But legislation benefiting them must also benefit the young female athletes who compete in our state.”

Eight states, so far, have enacted a ban similar to the one that Powell proposed.
