Oregon teacher warns colleagues who don’t cave to ‘anti-racist’ agenda, they’re equivalent to pedophiles

An Oregon middle school teacher allegedly implied that colleagues who don’t go along with a so-called anti-racist agenda are equivalent to pedophiles.

While lamenting so-called colonialism, the teacher — identified by multiple media outlets as Katherine Watkins — who teaches in the Beaverton School District in suburban Portland, claimed that non-compliant teachers could find themselves on the unemployment line in remarks that the Parents Defending Education organization posted to YouTube.

She made these comments during a diversity and equity summit on Zoom that was mandatory for teachers as part of their professional development that was held in February but is just now surfacing.

The grassroots organization provides a counterpoint to agenda-driven activism in the schools such as the promotion of critical race theory and apparently gained access to the footage that the school district had made private.

After first listing her preferred pronouns in the video, Watkins said the following:

“I’m going to say something that’s not nice and not sweet, but it’s true. If you’re not evolving into an anti-racist educator, you’re making yourself obsolete in this field of profession. Our district is only getting browner and browner with our children, and so obviously, you can’t change your melanin, all right? But you can change your mind, so that you can actually function in a district that is full of BIPOC children,”

BIPOC refers to black, indigenous, and people of color.

“So if you’re being resistant, I understand that, but you’re going to have to eventually come to the light. Because if you’re going to keep with those old views of colonialism, it’s gonna lead to being fired because you’re going to be doing damage to our children, trauma.”

“And so, as we fire the teachers who sexually abuse our children, we will be firing the teachers who do racist things to our children and traumatize them…It’s just a matter of time. So it’s like you either evolve or dissolve,” Watkins declared, with some other teachers in the footage nodding in agreement. She also insisted that the unions are on board with this approach.

The teacher was speaking only for herself, a representative of the school district told Fox News in a statement.

“Katherine Watkins does not speak for the Beaverton School District. All disciplinary or dismissal procedures are governed by state statute and our collective bargaining agreements with our unions, Beaverton Education Association (BEA) and Oregon School Employees Association (OSEA)… she has no official role in the equity efforts of the district.”

A statement to Newsweek from the same spokesperson was less reassuring.

“Throughout this past year, institutions have been called upon to re-evaluate their role in the perpetuation of implicit bias and systemic racism. The Beaverton School District is no exception…in the comments, we hear Ms. Watkins expressing her expectation that all our educators authentically engage in anti-bias, antiracist work for the benefit of our students…”

Stalwart CRT foe Asra Nomani, the Parents Defending education VP, offered this reaction:

“The bullying by a teacher in Beaverton public schools against other educators reveals a growing problem in school districts as ‘equity warriors’ lay siege on our schools. Teachers and staff who self-describe as ‘equity warriors’ harass colleagues until they submit to the new ideological indoctrination of critical race theory…The teacher’s threat should be publicly renounced by the school district.”

During the same online meeting, another teacher allegedly called upon white people to address systemic racism with the same energy as the “idiots” and “wacky” insurrections that stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6. The school district has also disavowed that comment.

As has been stated many times, CRT is fundamentally at odds with the goals of the civil rights movement that led to federal and state laws rendering racial discrimination of any kind illegal, including in the educational space. It also runs counter to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous inspirational quote about judging people based on the content of their character
