Last Saturday, USA Today published an opinion piece from Chelsea Mitchell, a teen girl who was ranked the fastest high school female in the 55-meter dash in Connecticut up until biological males who identify as transgender took her spot.
But by noon this Wednesday, the piece had been drastically altered by the left-wing paper’s editors reportedly to appease people who’d complained.
According to Mitchell’s attorney, Christiana Holcomb of the Alliance Defending Freedom, the editors completely removed all instances of the word “male.”
.@USATODAY published our client Chelsea Mitchell’s opinion about the unfairness she experienced being forced to compete against male athletes. But after backlash from the woke mob, editors unilaterally changed Chelsea’s words & called them “hurtful language.” 1/3 pic.twitter.com/tAtzrZgPzt

What was the “hurtful language” that editors deleted from Chelsea’s opinion piece three days after publication? The word “male.” 2/3
— Christiana Holcomb (@ChristianaADF) May 26, 2021
For instance, one line from the original piece read as follows: “I’ve lost four women’s state championship titles, two all-New England awards, and numerous other spots on the podium to male runners.”
In USA Today’s rewrite, here’s how it now reads: “I’ve lost four women’s state championship titles, two all-New England awards, and numerous other spots on the podium to transgender runners.”
Another line reads like this: “My friend and fellow plaintiff Selina Soule was bumped from qualifying for the state championship 55-meter final and an opportunity to qualify for the New England championship by a male runner in 2019. Meanwhile, Alanna Smith, an incredibly talented female athlete, was the second-place female runner in the 200-meter at the New England Regional Championships, but was dropped to third behind a male competitor.”
In USA Today’s rewrite, every single instance of “male” has been replaced with the word “transgender” to appease those who’d complained.

USA Today violated its principles to appease the mob. This blatant censorship violates the trust we place in media to be honest brokers of public debate.
Chelsea’s experience & viewpoint matters. That’s why we’re posting her original piece here https://t.co/bs6lRIxJq0. 3/3

As of Thursday morning, USA Today had not yet explained itself.
Meanwhile, an editor’s note on the piece read as follows: “This column has been updated to reflect USA TODAY’s standards and style guidelines. We regret that hurtful language was used.”
While it’s not clear who exactly had complained about Mitchell’s piece, the tweet below from GLAAD’s so-called “rapid response” team suggests the bellyachers had been LGBT activists:
Using accurate language (AKA calling trans girls “transgender” instead of “male”) is at the core of good journalistic principles. There was no violating of principles here.
What @USATODAY did was fix a mistake that should have been noticed and corrected upon publication. https://t.co/oxPAKvEmWm

Abigail Shrier, a well-known critic of transgender ideology, also appears to believe activists were responsible.
“The activists know well that Mitchell can’t make her argument without that word,” she wrote in a tweet critical of USA Today’s decision.
Look:
Outrageous. @usatoday changed Mitchell’s words, post-publication, on the grounds that the word “male” is hurtful.
The activists know well that Mitchell can’t make her argument without that word.
Shame on the useful idiots of USAToday.
If only they had half Mitchell’s courage. https://t.co/Llk9Si2w3z

Indeed, Twitter is littered with hateful, close-minded complaints from LGBT/transgender activists (*Language warning):
This bitch Chelsea Mitchell so transphobic she filed a lawsuit bc she was losing races but she lost that too 😭 pic.twitter.com/OqKEEVe0PQ

Chelsea Mitchell, blubbering in a USA Today editorial: I’m the fastest girl in track but then SOME TRANS beat me
Sounds like you’re NOT the fastest girl after all! I dunno, if I were A LOSER I wouldn’t tell the world in a nationally distributed newspaper

Anyway, Chelsea Mitchell is a little crybaby bitch

I support what USA Today did, because it is 2021. I hope Chelsea Mitchell is no longer allowed to speak or work for writing that hateful language.

It appears USA Today is more interested in appeasing these people than in allowing a teen girl — one of many — to share her thoughts on what it’s been like being forced to compete with biological males who claim to be women.
In concluding her piece, Mitchell wrote that all she and her peers want is to be able to compete fairly.
“[A] federal district court recently dismissed our case. … It’s discouraging that the federal district court has decided that these experiences — these lost opportunities — simply don’t matter. But I’m not beaten yet. And neither are my fellow female athletes. Through our ADF attorneys, my fellow athletes and I are appealing the federal district court’s ruling,” she wrote.
“We’re taking our case to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, where we are going to ask once again for the court to recognize our right to fair competition — a right that Title IX has promised to girls and women for 50 years. And we’re fighting not just for ourselves, but for all female athletes,” she added.
