Congresswoman Yvette Herrell (R-N.M.) is sending a message to Vice President Kamala Harris that it’s about time that she actually visited the U.S.-Mexico border to see the illegal immigration crisis up close and that the lawmaker is volunteering to be the VP’s local tour guide.
Harris should involve Congress in a bipartisan manner when she heads to Guatemala and Mexico for talks with officials there about the ongoing humanitarian and law enforcement emergency, Herrell added in a letter addressed to the vice president on Monday. President Joe Biden put Harris in charge of overseeing the crisis (a descriptor that the administration is reluctant to use), which is a responsibility that, to date, still has not involved including a visit to the region on the VP’s travel schedule.
Moreover, the Biden administration should follow the Trump playbook rather than merely trying to throw cash at so-called root causes in the form of foreign aid to Central America, Herrell asserted in the letter.
“[T]he only effective means of controlling illegal immigration is strong border security measures including more Border Patrol agents, physical infrastructure like a wall, and a consequence delivery system that deports, punishes, and discourages migrants from illegally entering our nation or making frivolous asylum claims…,” Herrell insisted.
In the letter to the VP, whom Joe Biden tasked with addressing the surge of illegal aliens pouring into America, Herrell extended an invitation for Harris to join her in the state’s second congressional district that she represents which borders Mexico “to see the crisis firsthand and how it is affecting Americans in my district who fear violence and property damage along the border.”
Rep. Herrell went on to recommend that both Democrat and Republican lawmakers, especially those representing border districts such as herself, should go along on Harris’ trip scheduled for next month. “This crisis can only be solved with bipartisan input and perspective from those who represent areas along the southern border,” she noted.

As alluded to above, the first-term lawmaker also cast doubt on whether addressing the so-called root causes of illegal immigration in the form of sending billions of foreign aid to Central America can get the job done.
“While foreign aid is warranted in some cases to advance American national interests, foreign aid to stop illegal immigration has never been shown to work or decrease, and in some cases actually increases, illegal immigration…in light of your administration’s massive spending, the American people cannot afford to waste even more money.”
The way forward, Herrell insisted, is to reinstitute former President Trump’s successful border enforcement policies, which included the Remain in Mexico procedure for asylum seekers, and also to enforce COVID-19 protocols.
“The most effective way to stop illegal immigration is to ensure consequences for those who break our laws or exploit our asylum system,” Herrell noted.
In a recent public appearance at the border, Herrell declared that “the ‘root cause’ is this: We’re stealing money from American taxpayers, and making a better life for kids coming here illegally than we are for our own kids…it is cruel, it is costly, and it is cowardice for our country to let this to continue to happen.”

Herrell this week introduced a bill called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Criminals Act which would require extensive screening for new arrivals, including mandatory detention rather than catch and release for illegal immigrants.
The Biden admin is welcoming 1000s of people into our country with little, if any, time for in-depth criminal & national security background checks. This poses a clear and present danger to our communities.
