Cruz, Crenshaw, others respond to royal twit Prince Harry calling First Amendment ‘bonkers’

Prince Harry fell in for some ribbing from some U.S. lawmakers and others on social media after he described the First Amendment as “bonkers” during a recent podcast.

In an episode last week of the “Armchair Expert” podcast featuring Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, the Duke of Sussex made the comments as he was talking about his new life in Los Angeles, where he and wife Meghan Markle have decided to settle after leaving the United Kingdom.

Specifically, he was discussing what he described as the mainstream media “feeding frenzy” surrounding his stay at actor and producer Tyler Perry’s mansion in Beverly Hills, and in particular, the paparazzi.

Prince Harry and Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana of Wales, died following a car crash in Paris in late August 1997 as the driver of her limousine was reportedly attempting to avoid paparazzi.

“I don’t want to start sort of going down the First Amendment route because that’s a huge subject and one in which I don’t understand because I’ve only been here a short period of time,” said the prince.

“But, you can find a loophole in anything. And you can capitalize or exploit what’s not said rather than uphold what is said,” he added. “I’ve got so much I want to say about the First Amendment as I sort of understand it, but it is bonkers.”

The comment drew reactions from American and British figures, including a comment from one newspaper columnist from Australia, which is still considered part of the British Monarchy.

“Nice that he can say that,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), responded.

“Well I just doubled the size of my Independence Day party,” added Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas).

“Princ Harry obviously prefers a Constitutional Monarchy in which his brother will control the church, legislative branch and all the money,” conservative journalist Emily Miller noted.

Onetime “BREXIT” leader Nigel Farage responded, “For Prince Harry to condemn the USA’s First Amendment shows he has lost the plot. Soon he will not be wanted on either side of the pond.”

“He’s such a tiresome flog. Shut up, Harry,” wrote Rita Panahi, an Australian newspaper columnist born in the United States, the child of Iranian parents.

“Sunday Riddle: How many more Hollywood-style interviews will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle give before they finally achieve the privacy they claim to be so desperate for?” conservative podcaster and author Candace Owens responded.

“I wonder if he also thinks the Fourth Amendment is ‘bollocks’ and the 14th Amendment is ‘pish-posh,’” tweeted conservative filmmaker and podcaster Dinesh D’Souza.

“Didn’t we break up with them like 200+ years ago? We don’t care what our ex thinks,” another Twiter user wrote.

“Of course he says it’s bonkers. King George III probably also thought it was bonkers,” said another.

In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry said that the royal family cut him off financially in early 2020 after he decided to step away and that he managed to live on the millions of dollars that his mother, “Princess Di,” left him.
