Florida principal in hot water for striking 6-year-old with paddle after mom leaks video

A disturbing video of a school principal striking a six-year-old child with a large wooden paddle is taking the nation by storm.

The incident occurred last month in Clewiston, Fla., with the video being recorded by the girl’s mother, who was in the room but did not consent to the paddling, according to WINK News.

Central Elementary School Principal Melissa Carter is seen holding a large paddle as a clerk at the school helps position the girl to be spanked. Carter then delivered three hard blows to her backside.

After the first swat, the child begins crying out loud. “No! No!” the girl sobbed as the punishment continued.

While corporal punishment is still allowed in some schools, Central Elementary in the Hendry County School District does not allow such punishment.

The paddling took place on April 13, reportedly over damage to a computer the child allegedly caused — damage that resulted in a $50 fee being required.

The mother, an illegal immigrant with limited English, went to the school to pay the fee, the CBS affiliate reported, but was taken to the principal’s office.

With her daughter already there, she then watched as the process played out.

“My daughter was already in the office,” the woman said. “The principal started to scream.”

According to the police report, the woman said that because of the language barrier, she didn’t understand the process correctly.

“The hatred with which she hit my daughter, I mean it was a hatred that, really I’ve never hit my daughter like she hit her,” she told WINK News in Spanish.

“I had never hit her,” the woman added, through tears.

According to WINK News, the mother got nervous about what was happening and decided to record it while hiding her phone in her purse.

“There are no cameras,” she said. “What are we doing in this place? My daughter and I, alone.”

“Nobody would have believed me,” the woman said. “I sacrificed my daughter, so all parents can realize what’s happening in this school.”

Attorney Brent Probinsky, who works with illegal immigrants, is representing the mother and called the incident “child abuse,” CBS Miami reported.

“She should be charged with a crime and suffer those consequences,” Probinsky said of the principal.

“At no time did the mom give permission for anyone, including the principal, to paddle their child,” the attorney insisted.

Probinsky also said the mother told him she didn’t intervene because she was frozen in fear.

“I think the mom was intimidated. The mom didn’t expect this to happen. It happened very quickly and the mom said ‘I was so astounded, I was so shocked, I was just frozen for a few moments when she was paddling my child,'” he said.

CBS Miami reported that the woman said she felt she couldn’t intervene and stop the beating because “she is undocumented.”
