‘It’s all theater’: Vaccinated VP Harris, CNN’s Bash mocked for SOTU interview

Vice President Kamala Harris and CNN host Dana Bash were ridiculed on social media following a “State of the Union” segment on Sunday as users noted their excessive social distancing, despite the fact that both of them have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Harris and Bash discussed a number of issues during the interview, including the ongoing border crisis, which the vice president said isn’t going to be “solved overnight.” But critics tended to hone in on the extreme distance between the two.

“Can you scooch back just a little?” writer Caleb Howe mocked. “Thanks! Little more though? Now just scooch a bit more. Juuust a bit more. Scooch a touch more? Thanks, a little more. CAN YOU HEAR ME? I SAID A BIT MORE! Can she [see] me waving my hand? Call her cell. Kamala? It’s Dana, can you scooch a bit more?”

“Security theater,” another user quipped.

“They’re freaking vaccinated,” GOP campaign adviser Ellen Carmichael added.

“An example that vaccines don’t work? Shouldn’t the example be, once vaccinated you return to normal? This is sending a terrible message and will tune people out to the vaccines,” another user noted.

“Liberal dog and pony show,” another user wrote.

“Grab some popcorn it’s all theatre,” said another.

One of Americans’ biggest concerns, according to recent polling, is the crisis at the border. Republicans have consistently rapped the vice president for failing to visit the border and see the crisis for herself weeks after President Joe Biden put her in charge of overseeing it on March 24.

Dozens of representatives and senators from both parties have traveled to the border and reported on the chaotic situation there, as well as the desperation experienced by immigration authorities and local law enforcement personnel. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also toured areas of the border earlier this month as illegal crossings surged to a 15-year record.

But on Sunday, Harris blithely dismissed a reporter who pressed her as to why she had yet to take the time to assess the situation first-hand.

“I’m not going to play political games,” Harris said.

In contrast, even state officials are taking time to assess the border chaos in person. Last week, San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Shamann Walton, Supervisors Hillary Ronen and Matt Haney, and school board president Gabriela López went to Tijuana and San Diego to assess the situation and meet with nonprofit organizations as well as migrants themselves.

Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott visited the border March 9 amid escalating reports of overcrowded detention facilities and overwhelmed border and immigration personnel. Following his visit, he ordered 500 additional Department of Public Safety officers and 500 National Guard troops to the border to begin assisting federal personnel and to engage in patrol duties.

“This crisis is a result of President Biden’s open-border policies, which invites illegal immigrants and creates a humanitarian crisis that will grow increasingly worse by the day,” Abbott said at the time. “I need the Biden administration to step up and provide the safety and security that Texas and Americans deserve.”

Last week, Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey declared a state of emergency in border counties due to the migrant surge and also ordered National Guard troops to begin assisting federal authorities.

“The U.S. Border Patrol is overwhelmed. Local law enforcement and mayors are calling out for help,” he said. “Citizens in our border communities are concerned for their safety, and nonprofits, left to pick up the pieces of broken federal policies, are strained … and yet we still haven’t received an adequate response from the (Joe) Biden administration.”
