A Michigan state representative apparently tried to use politician privilege after being arrested in an alleged drunk driving-related incident. That possible gambit didn’t work out so well, as he now faces eight charges in connection with the encounter, including resisting arrest.
Rep. Jewell Jones, a Michigan Democrat, allegedly told cops “”I don’t give a f— bro, when I call Gretchen ill (sic) need yall (sic) ID’s badge numbers everything…It’s not going to be good for you, I run y’all budget, bro,” according to the Detroit News.
Newly released dash-cam video of the April 6 incident appears to show Jewell trying to get inside an ambulance that was transporting his passenger from the scene. Cops had reportedly been dispatched to the area on Interstate 96 on a call about an SUV with an “ELECTED” vanity plate driving erratically and rolling into a ditch.
In the footage, a trooper intervened and repeatedly asked Jones, 26, for his ID and driver’s license (perhaps two different documents in Michigan).
Apparently the lawmaker tried to flash a badge of some sort instead of producing the requested identification.
Cops wound up taking him to the ground and reportedly deployed a stun gun and pepper spray to place him into custody. Officers than transported him to Livingston County jail, where he was released the following day.
Watch:
Jones, who is an auxiliary police officer, a Michigan National Guard member, and a church deacon, allegedly refused a breathalyzer at the scene. Cops subsequently secured a search warrant for a blood draw, allegedly resulting in a BAC of 0.19. Like most states, the legal limit in Michigan is 0.08.
Pending charges against the lawmaker, which are unproven at this point, include operating a vehicle with a high blood alcohol content, operating while intoxicated, reckless driving, four counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer, and possession of a weapon while under the influence of alcohol.
The latter charge is the result of cops allegedly spotting a loaded Glock in the vehicle’s cupholder.
Elected at age 21, Jones is the youngest person ever to serve in the Michigan House of Representatives
In a mega-thread, the Michigan GOP highlighted some of the more lurid, alleged details of this encounter, including the following:
(WARNING – IT GETS GRAPHIC): Jones was "holding the woman up" near the passenger side door, according to a police report obtained by MIRSnews. The woman's pants "were down" as she vomited and Jewell's pants "were partially down" when a paramedic arrived at the crash site.

When a state police trooper asked for Jones' identification, Jones refused, at one point prompting the trooper to tell Jones, "don't be dumb." During their exchange, Jones responds "I can't do that" when asked again for his driver's license and ID.

Jones continued to resist and was brought to the ground by state troopers, who told him to "stop resisting."

Officers do get Jones into handcuffs and he is eventually placed in the back of a Livingston County sheriff's deputy's vehicle, although video shows he resisted that request, as well. He was eventually transported to the county jail, where he was held overnight.

“The level of hypocrisy by Democrats here in Michigan is stunning. Their mantra is, ‘it’s rules for thee, but not for me,'” the Michigan GOP added. “This Democrat put thousands of families at risk by driving extremely drunk on a busy interstate between Lansing and Detroit. Will this be covered fairly? There are still so many questions that must be answered.”

Gov. Whitmer has not issued a public comment about this incident. The GOP also chided Whitmer for “hiding” and thus failing to support law enforcement, particularly the Michigan State Police.
