A sheriff’s deputy reportedly shot and killed a man in Elizabeth City, N.C., on Wednesday morning in the course of serving a search warrant. The incident, which has prompted local protests, is now being probed by the state bureau of investigation (SBI).
Law enforcement has identified the fatally-shot man as Andrew Brown, Jr., 42, a father of 10. He reportedly was driving away from the scene when he was shot by the Pasquotank County officer.
Describing it as a tragic day, Sheriff Tommy Wooten has vowed that the investigation will be fully transparent.
Multiple shots were allegedly fired by cops at the scene according to neighbors, after which Brown’s car struck a tree. Brown tragically died at the scene, according to one of the neighbors.
Body-cam footage exists, but authorities have not yet released it, which has increased concerns among community leaders as was among some city council members who are demanding accountability and a full disclosure of all the details.
The unidentified officer has been placed on administrative leave.
Watch a WAVY-TV news report:
Nor have the authorities revealed as yet the purpose of the search warrant.
“His family says Brown did not carry a gun and wouldn’t hurt anyone,” WAVY reported
State investigators will submit their case file to District Attorney Andrew Womble who said “What we are looking for at this time will be accurate answers and not fast answers. We’re going to wait for the full and complete investigation…and we’ll review that and make any determinations that we deem appropriate at that time. This will not be a rush to judgment,” the Associated Press reported.
Watch the sheriff’s press conference:
“Court records show Brown…had a history of drug charges and a misdemeanor drug possession conviction,” AP added.
Protesters gathered at the scene as well as outside city hall Wednesday night while the city council held an emergency meeting.
The protesters later congregated outside the sheriff’s office as well as at one of the city’s main thoroughfares, blocking traffic in the process in the municipality located about 170 miles northeast of Raleigh, N.C.

“Andrew Brown did not get his due process! A search warrant should not equal a death sentence. … We lost a brother today.”
