Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has issued a challenge to her Democratic House colleague from New York, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, to debate the merits and pitfalls of the latter’s “Green New Deal,” an ambitious and highly controversial plan to completely retool the manner in which Americans produce and consume energy as well as utilize resources.
Greene, who has offered to debate “AOC” a number of times in recent weeks, renewed her challenge again on Twitter Wednesday in a post containing a photo of her talking to the self-avowed Democratic socialist.
“I’m glad I ran into you today @AOC to plan our debate about the Green New Deal. After I finish reading all 14 pages, like we agreed, I’ll schedule time for our debate,” Greene wrote, adding the hashtag “#MTGvsAOC.”

A day earlier, Ocasio-Cortez and her “Squad” joined in a new push for the Green New Deal that included various pieces of legislation for new public housing, funding for cities, and a civilian climate corps. Republicans countered by saying if the U.S. adopted all of the plan’s measures, then countries around the world would become more dependent on Russia and China, the two primary competitors to U.S. global dominance.
In recent days since first calling for a debate between the two, Greene has touted her business background in interviews and tweets, noting that she has been the owner of a construction company in her home state of Georgia for 20 years. At one point, she compared her experience and resume with Ocasio-Cortez’s “degree in economics,” which she obtained from Boston University. Prior, the New York Democrat has highlighted her experience as a bartender.
“A debate between AOC and I on the Green New Deal economic policy would be informative for the American people,” Greene wrote on Twitter last week, adding that she has a degree in business administration. “They deserve to hear the two sides with pro’s and cons.”

Greene went on to write that both of the lawmakers could choose a moderator and then find a major network to host the debate.

For her part, Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday that it’s a “false notion” that the country has to choose between the economy and doing what is best for the planet.
“And we decided to come together in sweeping legislation that not only rejects that notion, but creates a plan for 20 million union jobs in the United States of America to rebuild our infrastructure, to restore public housing, to make sure that we expand our access not only to EV [electric vehicles] and EV infrastructure, but mass transit,” she said.
But her plan has been widely criticized not only as patently unaffordable, but impractical as well.
One study released shortly after the New Yorker introduced her plan said it would cost average American households upwards of $70,000 in the first year of its implementation, with tens of thousands of dollars per year in additional costs thereafter.
The study by the Competitive Enterprise Institute found that households “will be on the hook for more than $70,000 in increased costs for electricity, upgrading vehicles and housing, and shipping in just the first year under the Green New Deal.”
“The Green New Deal is a radical blueprint to de-carbonize the American economy by refashioning how we grow food, move people and goods, source and distribute electricity, and build the structures where we live, work, and play,” CEI President Kent Lassman said in July 2019, shortly after the plan was introduced.
“Our analysis shows that, if implemented, the Green New Deal would cost for American households at least tens of thousands of dollars annually on a permanent basis. Perhaps that’s why exactly zero Senate Democrats, including the resolution’s 12 co-sponsors, voted for the Green New Deal when they had the chance,” he added.
