Noted Trump-haters in Congress dropping major coin on beefed-up security

When it comes to the Trump haters in Congress, it appears that those who have been the most vocal in their opposition to the former president are finding themselves a bit nervous in the service of their country.

With Thursday marking 100 days since the storming of the U.S. Capitol, Punchbowl News did a piece on just how much money some members of Congress are spending on personal security.

With temporary fencing installed around the White House following the protest just starting to come down this week, fencing that prompted some Republican lawmakers to dub the Capitol complex “Fort Pelosi,” there are a few representatives and senators spending tens of thousands of dollars “to protect themselves and their families,” the article noted.

While the liberal media insisted Jan. 6 was an insurrection, an orchestrated effort to overthrow the federal government, there has not been another incident that could be linked to the first protest – a security checkpoint at the Capitol was rammed on April 2, but the suspect, a Nation of Islam follower shot and killed after brandishing a knife, appeared to act alone.

Nonetheless, Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Penn., spent nearly $70,000 on security, according to first-quarter Federal Election Commission reports.

“His campaign spent $39,000 with T&M USA LLC, which provides a variety of security services; $18,376 with Altronics, which provides closed-circuit security monitoring; $7,300 with Fortified Estate, which brands itself as “The Leader In Refined Ballistic Doors, Windows, Walls & Panic Rooms”; $3,900 at Tint Pro, which provides shaded windows; and $650 with Lehigh Valley Paladin LLC, security and intelligence professionals,” Punchbowl reported.

He wasn’t the only GOP lawmaker feeling a need to bolster security.

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, spent $43,633 with Ambolt Security Group, a company run by a former police officer and two former FBI agents.

Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., one of a handful of House Republicans voting to impeach Trump, spent $50,400.

Speaking of Cheney, she took care Thursday to mark the 100 day anniversary of the Capitol protest.

Rep. John Katko, R-N.Y., reportedly spent $19,874, and Rep. Anthony Gonzalez R-Ohio, spent $1,540 on “residential security.”

Punchbowl pointed out that some lawmakers in DC have been “the target of violent threats via phone, email or social media,” adding that these threats “soared” after the second impeachment of Trump.

At the same time, with the advent of social media, making threats has gotten pretty easy.

On the other side of the aisle, AOC led the way in dropping major coin to keep herself safe. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., spent more than $45,000 on security.

Given her propensity for drawing criticism, the figure may seen somewhat low.

Fellow “Squad” member, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., paid out a relatively modest $4,000 for the last quarter, the Daily Mail reported.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., the lawmaker who was reportedly engaged in a sexual relationship with suspected Chinse spy Fang Fang, spent $44,400 on security with Global Guardian in Virginia.

As an impeachment manager — an appointment that came after Spy-gate — Swalwell was assigned a temporary Capitol Police security detail, according to Punchbowl.

The Federal Election Commission allows campaign expenditures for security, such as purchasing a home alarm system or closed-circuit TV camera set up, Punchbowl said.
