The Washington Post was mocked online following the publication of a glowing piece featuring Vice President Kamala Harris crocheting as the border crisis she was put in charge of managing continues to worsen.
“When Vice President Harris visited a woman-owned yarn shop in Alexandria last month, she mentioned a little-known fact about herself that left the fiber arts community a bit giddy,” noted WaPo reporter Juda Koncius. “The new vice president is a crocheter.”
“I was raised by a mother who said ‘I am not going to let you sit in front of that television doing nothing.’ And so I have crocheted more afghans than I can tell you,” Harris said while at the store, according to Koncius. “And our daughter is a knitter.”
The fawning piece also pointed out that Harris’s revealing of her pastime has only contributed to the “cool factor” of crocheting. Now others who engage in the activity’s rites Koncius, believe now that Harris joining their ranks gives them more “street cred.”
Anyone walking along the Wharf in Washington, Koncius writes, will be able to see a large crocheted mural of Harris with the words, “I’m speaking” — a reference to a chastising line she used during her debate with then-Vice President Mike Pence.
The piece was met with derision online, with one user, Tim Graham, the executive editor of Newsbusters, mentioning the border crisis and suggesting it is a far more important issue.
“WHAT border crisis? WashPost gives us Jura Koncius puff piece titled ‘Vice President Harris is making her mark on the Washington-area crochet scene.’ This story is so soft, it seems un-Koncius, or has a ‘giddy’ and enhanced Koncius-ness,” he wrote on Twitter.

Regarding their sole debate in October, most uncommitted voters in a focus group run by pollster Frank Luntz who watched it were completely turned off by Harris’s behavior, ultimately characterizing her as “abrasive,” “evasive,” and “unpresidential.”
“They gave us three conclusions,” Luntz said of the undecided voters. “The complaint about Kamala Harris was that she was abrasive and condescending. The complaint about Mike Pence was that he was too tired, but vice presidential, or presidential.”
The Post has been accused of running public relations on behalf of Harris before. In late December, the paper published a story about the “inspirational” relationship between Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff.
The story fawned over the couple’s courtship process “that offers hope, inspiration, and a little instruction,” while adding she and Emhoff share a mutual admiration for each other that causes the VP to “beam” when she talks about him.
“For those of us still looking for a relationship that makes us smile that wide, their bond has a way of signaling: Keep looking. Your Doug is out there,” the story noted.

“The WaPo crochet profile can be interpreted as another example of the apparent media love affair with Harris,” Fox News observed on Wednesday. “Vogue, for instance, featured her on the cover of their February 2021 issue. The Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, was mocked after announcing in January that it would launch the section ‘Covering Kamala Harris’ as ‘a beat dedicated to her historic rise to the White House.’ Some critics accused the Times of acting like a ‘PR firm’ for the Biden administration.”
