GMA accused of pushing ‘ultimate fear panic porn’ in breathless reporting of a ‘double mutant’ Covid variant

The COVID-19 pandemic has now surpassed a year and shows few signs of relenting, even as millions of Americans are getting vaccinated.

The so-called experts continue to push for restrictions and precautions, and many in government are hesitant to ease up in the face of so many people anxious to get back to any sense of normalcy.

Another consistency still at play is the fearmongering by the media, but ABC’s “Good Morning America” took things to a whole other level in reporting on a “double mutant” COVID variant being found in the U.S., warning of a possible fourth wave of the virus.

ABC News reporter Kaylee Hartung was reporting from Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, where the home town Rangers would play before a full-capacity crowd later in the day Monday, and the network spoke about “a double mutant coronavirus variant” first discovered in India, that has now been identified in the San Francisco area.

A clip was run of Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, an infectious disease expert, saying, “This is the first time this particular double mutant has been found in the United States, and it was found here in our Stanford laboratory.”

The narrator added, “This as COVID cases across the country climb, and a fourth wave growing, even as more than 106 million Americans have received at least one dose of the vaccine.”

A clip of Dr. Anthony Fauci was played, where he talked about a race between getting people vaccinated and “blunting or preventing that surge that we’re all concerned about.”

Despite more and more people getting vaccinated, ABC reports that the nation’s daily case average “is up nearly 20% in the last weeks,” adding that a Brazilian variant of the virus is being found more in Massachusetts than anywhere else in the country.

Dr. Douglas Golenbock, chief of the Division of Infectious Disease & Immunology at the University of Massachusetts, is shown saying, “If we don’t control COVID-19, that gives the virus new opportunities to mutate and raise. Now is not the time to let our guards down.”

Returning to Arlington, GMA reported on the death of a man attending the NCAA tournament in Indianapolis last week, before citing President Joe Biden calling the decision to allow full attendance a mistake.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order last month reopening Texas 100 percent, and lifting a mask mandate that was in place — the governor shared last week that the state has since hit a record low for COVID-19 cases.

But still, the GMA reporting was enough to send folks scampering under their beds for another 6 months.
