Vernon Jones, fmr. Democrat lawmaker in Georgia, mulls GOP challenge to Gov. Brian Kemp

Vernon Jones, the Democrat-turned-Republican former Georgia state representative and high-profile Trump supporter, is strongly considering a challenge to incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp in the 2022 Republican primary.

“Ultimately, I’m going to need to make that decision, and we will be making that decision. But I can tell you this…Get ready. Somebody’s gonna ‘Feel the Vern.’ Somebody’s gonna ‘Get Verned.’ I’ll tell you that,” Jones quipped in an interview with Just the News AM.

Jones mentioned that he has been traveling extensively in Georgia and around the country with a conservative message that includes election integrity, school choice, and support for the First and Second Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

“I came to the Grand Old Party with grand new ideas, grand new people, and grand new opportunities…I joined the Republican Party not just to be a member, I joined to provide some leadership and show how we can win and protect our values including the Constitution,” he explained in the video embedded below, which you can review and draw your own conclusions.

“Last April, Jones became the first state elected Democratic official in Georgia to endorse Donald Trump’s reelection bid saying that he supported without hesitation the then-President’s handling of the economy, his support for historically black colleges, and his criminal justice reform initiatives,” Just the News recalled.

“White liberals have destroyed the black community. Now it’s time for the black community to destroy the liberals,” Jones claimed during the discussion.

 

Jones is one of many who contend that the state’s GOP leadership in the form of the governor, lieutenant governor, and secretary of state inexplicably allowed watered-down voting procedures that, in the end, handed Georgia to Biden and gave the Democrats control of the U.S. Senate.

Parenthetically, U.S. Rep. Jody Hice has already announced a primary challenge to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger which has won President Trump’s endorsement.

Despite the fear-mongering by the left, Jones said that the new law that Kemp —  on a “too little, too late” basis — signed doesn’t go far enough. “What this does is place another step towards providing integrity in our election process…This is a step in the right direction, but I would have loved to see it go farther in terms of our voting system, and what type of system we use that would really restore integrity in our election process,” he said.

“All this came about because our governor failed and our secretary of state failed Georgians. How is it that Stacey Abrams came in and got them, through a backroom deal with the secretary of state, to change what only the constitution provides that only General Assembly members can do?…This is theatrics, not leadership,” he asserted.

Jones also reject the Democrats’ typical hyperventilating over photo ID requirements and pushing lurid, divisive claims of a Jim Crow 2.0 victimology narrative.

“They’re demeaning black people by saying that they can’t have an ID, they cannot afford an ID… you need an ID when you go to the hospital, you need an ID when you get the COVID shot. This has nothing to do with suppressing the black vote…,” Jones said.

Alluding to the fact that the Jim Crow racial segregation laws in the southern states were implemented by Democrats, Jones declared that “I think it’s ironic that the Jim Crows are trying to call somebody else a Jim Crow. As you know, the Democratic Party has always been a part of Jim Crow…this is their Jim Crow 6.0; they’re on steroids.

If he became governor, Vernon Jones vowed near the conclusion of the interview that on day one. he would introduce legislation to prevent biological males from competing in women’s sports.

In a New York Post op-ed, Rich Lowry similarly called out the Democrats from Biden on down for wildly exaggerating the negative impact of the Georgia law.

Anyone making this charge in good faith either doesn’t understand the hideousness of the Jim Crow regime or the provisions of the Georgia law.

The old Jim Crow was billy clubs and firehoses; the alleged new Jim Crow is asking people to write a driver’s-license number on their absentee-ballot envelopes.

The old Jim Crow was poll taxes; the new Jim Crow is expanding weekend voting. The old Jim Crow was disenfranchising voters en masse based on their race; the new Jim Crow is limiting ballot drop boxes to places they can’t be tampered with.

It is hard to believe that one real voter is going to be kept from voting by the new rules.

To better ensure the security of absentee ballots, the law requires that voters provide a driver’s-license or state-ID number to apply for a ballot and one of those numbers (or the last four digits of a Social Security number) when returning the ballot. The law narrows the window for requesting absentee ballots, although it still allows plenty of time…
