Suspect arrested in brutal attack on elderly Asian women, on parole for killing his mother

The suspect in a brutal attack on a 65-year-old petite Asian woman walking to church on Monday has been arrested. The victim was kicked and stomped four times in broad daylight on a New York City sidewalk.

“F–k you, you don’t belong here,” the attacker reportedly yelled at the poor woman.

On Tuesday, Brandon Elliot, 38, a convicted murderer on parole, was arrested for the attack, according to New York Police Department Commissioner Dermot Shea. He has been charged with assault and hate crime offenses.

Elliot is a parolee out on supervised release since 2019, after serving time in prison for murdering his own mother 17 years prior, according to an NYPD spokesperson. He is reportedly homeless and was staying at a homeless hotel blocks from where the attack took place.

Shea praised detectives online for their work: “Great work by your @NYPDDetectives, identifying & apprehending the assailant, all within 48 hrs — always seeking justice for victims.”

The story shook the nation not only for its brutality, but also for the actions of others who witnessed the attack that was captured on video.

A man believed to be a building security guard ignored the elderly woman lying on the sidewalk afterward, walking over to an open door to peer outside, before shutting the door. A delivery man was also seen looking on without rendering any assistance.

The management company suspended the building staff who witnessed the attack, according to the New York Post.

“The staff who witnessed the attack have been suspended pending an investigation in conjunction with their union,” the statement said. “The Brodsky Organization is also working to identify a third-party delivery vendor present during the incident so that appropriate action can be taken.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, whose policies continue to turn criminals out on city streets, said the attack was “a disgusting display of both hatred and indifference.”

He called on residents to intervene in incidents like this while sharing the footage of the attack.

“This is a disgusting display of both hatred and indifference. We cannot allow this violence to continue. New Yorkers cannot stand by silently while a fellow New Yorker is attacked,” the mayor tweeted. “We MUST stand together as one community to #StopAsianHate once and for all.”
