Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was blasted online Sunday over a tweet some people took as blaming the horrific death of an Uber Eats driver a day earlier on the victim rather than two black teenage carjackers who have been charged with killing him.
“Auto theft is a crime of opportunity. Follow these steps to reduce the risk of your vehicle becoming a target. Remember the motto: #ProtectYourAuto,” Bowser wrote in the since-deleted tweet.
Video that from a bystander that went viral online Saturday evening showed Mohammad Anwar, 66, a Pakistani immigrant who lived in nearby Springfield, Va., struggling with two girls, ages 13 and 15, as they attempted to steal his car. He can be heard shouting, “This is my car!” before the vehicle suddenly surges forward and continues down a street.
The bystander continued taking video as the vehicle veered into another vehicle down the street and sped off out of view around a corner, followed by a loud crash. The bystander then ran down the block and discovered the carjacked vehicle on its side, with National Guard troops assisting one of the girls out of the car. Anwar can be seen lying motionless, face down, on the sidewalk.

The two teens were booked into the Metropolitan Police Department on felony murder and carjacking charges. Anwar came to the U.S. from Pakistan in 2014. His family said he is a father and grandfather with several loved ones in both countries.
“Carjackings are a senseless act of violence that risk the lives of innocent individuals, and over the course of this month, we have worked to raise awareness about a troubling increase in this violent crime, related arrests and safety tips,” a spokeswoman for the mayor told Fox News in a subsequent statement.
“Today’s prescheduled social media post was part of that effort and should not detract from the tragic death of Mohammad Anwar. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and the families of those we have lost to violence.”
Nevertheless, Bower was blasted online.
One America News’ Jack Prosobiec posted a screengrab of Bower’s deleted tweet, asking why she deleted it.

“Horrible timing on this clearly scheduled tweet. And even if Mohammed Anwar wasn’t dead, carjackings are a plague in DC — there isn’t a lot you can do [with regard to] risk reduction besides simply not driving a car. This was broad daylight,” journalist Natalia Antonova wrote.

“Blame the victim huh? How about cracking down on perpetrators to deter this behavior?” Jesse Hunt, communications director for the Republican Governor’s Association, added.

“Uber Eats driver Muhammad Anwar was the victim of a carjacking by two teenage girls, who committed felony murder, in DC. He died as a result of injuries. I presume this is a scheduled tweet but it’s extremely tone deaf. Bowser’s silence is deafening,” media strategist Gabriella Hoffman tweeted with a photo of Anwar.

According to court testimony from DC Metro Police homicide Detective Chad Leo, one of the girls told officers the pair made a plan on Tuesday to use a stun gun to steal a car.
Separately, Fox News reported Sunday that, just hours after the two teen girls’ botched carjacking, Metro DC Police arrested two teen boys, ages 13 and 14, both from the city, with armed carjacking after stealing a car at knifepoint earlier in the week.
MPD announces two arrests have been made in an Armed Carjacking (Knife) offense that occurred on 3/25/21 in the 100 Blk of 42nd St, NE.
Thank you to all who assisted in making DC safer with these arrests.
