Bad news for Biden: Pollsters gauge real-time reactions to long-awaited presser

A pollster who gauged Americans’ responses to President Joe Biden’s first press conference in real-time said that his replies to questions about running again in 2024 as well as former President Donald Trump cost him his campaign message of “unity.”

In a Friday segment with “Fox & Friends,” pollster Lee Carter went through grades given to Biden’s press conference from Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, noting that the Americans in the last two categories generally gave the president poor marks.

The most damaging to Biden, however, were remarks he made appearing to dismiss the GOP as a threat by 2024 as comments he made about his predecessor. Specifically, when he was asked if he thought he would face Trump next campaign cycle, Biden said he had “no idea whether there will be a Republican Party” by then.

“It really torched his message of unity. He says he’s a president for unity, and yet he says, ‘I don’t even know if there’s a Republican Party,’” Carter said.

“He was completely dismissive of Donald Trump, laughed at him. And I think that’s — it sort of came to the front, how people — how he really feels about the other side. And it didn’t — it didn’t go well for him,” she said, adding that Independent and Republican voters both gave Biden an “F” for those answers.

Earlier, Carter noted that Republicans and Independents also gave Biden low marks for his response to a suggestion from PBS correspondent Yamiche Alcindor that migrants were surging to the U.S. border again because the president is a “moral and decent man,” though Democrats gave him high marks.

“Democrats are basically giving [Biden] the benefit of the doubt,” Carter said. “I’m laser-focused on those independents and I think they’re very skeptical of Joe Biden’s response.

“They wanted answers on the border. They know that people aren’t coming through because he’s a ‘decent’ guy,” she added. “They know it’s because he’s loosening policies and there’s a problem there.”

In another segment the Fox & Friends hosts played, Biden is seen speaking about potentially ending the filibuster but wound up fading off and ending his statement without making any real point.

Democrats gave Biden an “A” for the segment, while Independents handed Biden a grade of “C” and Republicans a “D.”

“Democrats…are willing to accept this,” Carter said, noting that Democratic voters are “bored” and they don’t see Biden as “dangerous.”

“Republicans are not, they’re concerned,” she continued. “They’re looking at this and saying, ‘What’s going on here? This is a big deal, we want answers,’ and he seems not able to be up to the task.”

Biden’s presser was also widely panned by other analysts and hosts including Fox News’ Sean Hannity and The First TV’s Jesse Kelly, among others.

“It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Despite weeks of preparation, even fake news CNN admits it, cheat sheets with 14-point font and a compliant media mob lobbing one softball question after another,” Hannity said on his Thursday evening show.

“The frail, the weak, the cognitively struggling commander-in-chief, or is he, did not do well today, to say the least,” Hannity continued.

“When the president of the United States speaks, everyone watches,” Kelly said Thursday as well. “Our friends watch, potential illegal immigrants watch, and our enemies watch.

“They were watching, they were judging, they were trying to figure out, ‘what’s he gonna say? How’s he going to say it? Is this somebody I can maybe push around a little bit?’” Kelly added.
