Tucker Carlson is calling out Michigan’s “dictatorial” attorney general for fundamentally misplaced priorities upon the possibly retaliatory arrest of a state restaurant owner for noncompliance with COVID regulations following the restaurateur’s appearance on his Fox News Channel show.
“Dana Nessel has better things to do than stop murderers or figure out why elderly people are dying [in nursing homes]…she should be impeached by the Michigan legislature for her many abuses of power,” the host of Tucker Carlson Tonight declared about the Democrat AG, who along with lockdown-loving Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, put constituents into the equivalent of house arrest during the pandemic.
Carlson began the mini-monologue as he closed out the broadcast on Wednesday, March 24, by noting that violent crime is surging in some of Michigan’s cities, but Nessel instead decided to deploy resources to jail Marlena Pavlos-Hackney, an immigrant from then-Communist Poland, who owns Marlena’s Bistro and Pizzeria.
“As the state’s chief law enforcement officer, you’d think [Nessel would] be very concerned about all those people getting murdered in her state, but she’s not concerned. Nor has Nessel bothered to investigate her governor, Gretchen Whitmer, who — like Andrew Cuomo — is responsible for the deaths of so many nursing home residents from COVID. Gretchen Whitmer is Dana Nessel’s political ally, so she’s getting a pass completely,” Carlson declared.
“She has instead marshaled the full force of the state to crush a single disobedient restaurant owner, a Polish immigrant called Marlena Pavlos-Hackney, who we’ve had on this show. Pavlos-Hackney’s crime was disobeying state corona regulations. So last week, Nessel had her handcuffed and arrested in a sting operation as she drove to work.
“Keep in mind there is no proof that Pavlos-Hackney is responsible for a single COVID infection…but Dana Nessel sent her to jail anyway, and then issued a highly self-righteous press release bragging that she did it…it’s hard to imagine a more disproportionate response than this.”

“For those who watched Dana Nessel for the past few years, it’s not surprising. Dana Nessel is out of control,” Tucker continued. “She is an ideologue; she cares only about partisan advantage. She should be impeached by the Michigan legislature for her many abuses of power. She’s that corrupt. But she’s also a bit of a dim bulb. Not a super genius. And that’s why, when she was asked why she put Marlena Pavlos-Hackney in jail, Nessel actually admitted the real reason. She didn’t make up some fake legal principle.
“She said straightforwardly that Marlena Pavlos-Hackney had dared to come on this show at 8:00 p.m. and complain about her. That’s no longer allowed. And to compound the offense, Pavlos-Hackney tried to raise money for her own legal defense. And that, too, is now a crime in Dana Nessel’s Michigan.
“Sound like America to you? No it doesn’t. It sounds like dictatorship. Dana Nessel is a threat to the rule of law, the law that she is charged with enforcing, and she should be removed immediately. When people like this take positions like attorney general, it’s not a joke,” Carlson concluded.

As alluded to above, in a statement that also gratuitously bashed President Donald Trump, Nessel reportedly wrote, in part, that Pavlos-Hackney “defied her local health department and the court at every turn, instead choosing to taunt health inspectors, law enforcement and the courts at every turn – going on Tucker Carlson and setting up a lucrative Go Fund Me account instead of making even the slightest effort to protect her customers, her workers and community.”
In a separate statement, Nessel claimed that one of the restaurant’s patrons tested positive for COVID within 48 hours of eating there, and that overall “This owner has continued to willfully violate the state’s food laws, public health orders and the order of the court.”
After about four days in custody, Pavlos-Hackney was released after paying a $15,000 fine. The restaurant is closed; her lawyer says that the eatery will remain shuttered during the legal process. “We’re going to fight the underlying charges,” the attorney told the Detroit News.
George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, who has earned a national reputation as a fair-minded liberal, claimed that the far-left Nessel showed “raw political bias,” even though Pavlos-Hackney’s “long history of noncompliance” may have justified the arrest.
“Nessel goes out of her way to taunt Pavlos-Hackney and her supporters,” Turley wrote. “She also makes specific reference to her going on the Tucker Carlson show. Given the free speech issues in such appearances, the reference to a national show (in which Nessel was criticized) shows, at a minimum, terrible judgment by Nessel. This is particularly concerning given Nessel prior threats against people who raised electoral fraud claims…
“The entire statement reads like a political screed rather than a prosecutorial statement. It is both unprofessional and unwarranted in addressing the arrest of a citizen…Nessel could have left the matter by detailing the history of noncompliance as sufficient justification for the arrest. Nessel did precisely the opposite to pander to a political base. She seems to struggle to fulfill every stereotype of a biased political operative exercising criminal enforcement authority.”
