Ted Cruz puts Kamala Harris’ feet to the fire over border surge: ‘What are you hiding?’

Sen. Ted Cruz called out Vice President Kamala Harris over an old tweet in which she made a number of promises regarding immigration a day after President Joe Biden placed her in charge of dealing with the current migrant crisis at the U.S. southwest border.

“As president, I will immediately put in place a meaningful process to review asylum cases. I will release children from cages. I will get rid of the private detention centers. It’s time we had a president whose actions reflected the values of our country,” Harris, then a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, tweeted July 5, 2019.

The Texas Republican quoted Harris’ old tweet in one of his own late Wednesday night in which he announced that he would be visiting the border with several other senators to view conditions under which illegal aliens and minor migrant children are being held.

“Kamala, tomorrow 17 senators are joining me at the TX border.  The Biden admin is refusing to allow press to see the CBP facilities,” Cruz wrote. “Since you’ve promised to ‘release children from cages,’ surely your admin will allow media to film the empty cages. If not, what are you hiding?”

The senators’ visit comes amid rising criticism as the Biden administration banned media from accessing immigrant detention facilities, which is unprecedented in the modern era.

“I’m going down to the Texas border to take a look because I can’t look on any media and being able to tell what’s going on,” Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) said during a press conference Wednesday, with Cruz and others in attendance.

“Not a single member of the media is allowed to be able to go to take a look at this facility,” Lankford continued. “That’s not true of any of the four previous administrations.

“This administration, in the last 24 hours, said ‘we’ll show you what’s going on,’ so they sent a government camera reporter to take government photos and sent it out to the media and say, ‘here’s your video that you can run with it,’” the Oklahoma Republican added.

Those photos included pictures of Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection agents performing various tasks inside detention facilities including feeding migrants, stocking shelves, and taking care of babies.

“I would hope that the media doesn’t just say, ‘okay, now we know what’s going on because someone on the Biden team took pictures and sent them to us,’” he continued, adding that on the president’s first day in office, he declared the border “emergency was over.”

Earlier this week, undercover journalism organization Project Veritas published what it said were images taken from inside a migrant detention facility in Donna, Texas that purported to show migrant families and children stuffed into tight spaces and sleeping on floors wrapped in tinfoil-like emergency blankets.

“These photos were taken within the last few days. There are eight pods with eight cells each in the facility. At any given moment there are an average of 3,000 people in custody here,” an anonymous source reportedly told the group.

“They [illegal immigrants] are separated by age or physical size depending on room. Fifty were COVID positive in these cells over the last few days. There have been multiple sexual assaults, normal assaults and daily medical emergencies,” the source added.

Meanwhile, the Government Accountability Office has launched an investigation into Biden’s early decision to halt construction of the border wall begun under former President Donald Trump.

Senate Republicans requested the probe, suggesting that Biden violated the Impoundment Control Act that prohibits presidents from changing funding that Congress has already appropriated. In December, Congress passed a $900 billion COVID relief measure that contained $1.4 billion earmarked for wall construction.

“He was in the Congress a long time. He knows it’s the Congress’ job to authorize how the money is spent and the president’s job to spend it efficiently,” retiring GOP Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri told Politico.
