House Dems cite delayed stimulus checks as reason to oust Trump appointees at IRS, SSA

A group of House Democrats are demanding answers on alleged delays in getting the recently approved $1,400 stimulus checks out — and like with most things regarding the party there appears to be an ulterior motive at play.

The direct payments were part of the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion blue state bailout bill disguised as a Covid relief measure and the lawmakers acknowledged in a letter to the heads of the IRS and Social Security Administration that there have been 90 million checks distributed.

But people who do not have to file a tax return, including veterans and some Social Security beneficiaries, have not received their checks, the letter noted.

“The American Rescue Plan was intended to provide much-needed economic stimulus and assistance to people across the country – immediately – and we are counting on your agencies to ensure that beneficiaries are not left behind in the seamless delivery of those payments,” the Democrats wrote.

“Since the American Rescue Plan Act was enacted on March 11, the IRS has already delivered about 90 million payments,” the letter read. “However, we were alarmed to learn recently that most Social Security, SSI, RRB, and VA beneficiaries who are not required to file a tax return have not yet received their payments and the IRS is unable to provide an expected timeline for these payments.”

For what it’s worth, some illegal immigrants will likely receive checks as well.

The Associated Press reported that foreign nationals “who entered the U.S. on a temporary work visa and were issued Social Security numbers may be able to receive a payment, even if they overstayed their visas.”

Social Security Administration spokesperson Dorothy Clark told CNN that “once a Social Security Number has been assigned to an eligible person, it remains a valid SSN. Social Security does not void or rescind SSNs after valid assignments.”

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., was among those who signed the letter. In addition to asking why it was “taking so damn long” to get the checks out in a tweet, he betrayed another motive behind their actions; sweeping Trump appointees from the agencies involved.

“A few weeks ago I called for President Biden to fire the trump appointees trying to dismantle Social Security,” Pascrell said in another tweet. “Their inability to get out stimulus checks is another reason they need to be shown the exit.”

“We urge the IRS and SSA to move with all deliberate speed to quickly issue these payments to Social Security and SSI beneficiaries – and we urge the IRS to work with the RRB and VA to pay those beneficiaries expeditiously as well,” the letter concluded.

U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, also signed the letter, along with U.S. Reps. John Larson, D-Conn., and Danny Davis, D-Ill.
