To hear Georgia Rep. Andrew Clyde tell it, he knew exactly what he was doing every time he side-stepped the U.S. Capitol’s metal detectors.
A staunch gun rights advocate, Clyde was fined $5,000 for sidestepping the metal detectors on Feb. 3rd and then an additional $10,000 for doing the same on Feb. 4th.
The violations came in the wake of the Democrat-led House instituting a rule imposing hefty fines on anyone who refuses to pass through the metal detectors.
After the fines, Clyde and Rep. Louie Gohmert, who was also fined for violating the rule, both filed appeals to the Democrat-led House Ethics Committee, which led to some wondering what the point was.
According to Roll Call, a majority of the Democrat-led committee must approve the appeal for it to be granted. But since the committee is evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats, there’s no chance of that happening.
So again, what was the point?

Speaking with Fox News on Saturday, Clyde claimed he’d purposefully set himself up to be fined so that he could establish the legal standing needing to sue House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. It’s not clear whether Gohmert had done the same.
“I did that so we would have legal standing to take the case to federal court, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. And I’m all teed up to do that. People have to stand for the Constitution. And if I have to get fined in order to give me a legal standing to do that, then I’ll be fined,” he said.
“That’s OK. I’m good with the taking a hit for the team. But we’re going to win on this and we’re going to have House Resolution 73 declared unconstitutional because it is unconstitutional. It was all preplanned to make sure that we had legal standing.”
Can that actually be done, though? Yes.
“If Clyde or Gohmert disagree with the decision of the Ethics panel, they could take the issue to court,” according to Roll Call.
And that is indeed the plan.
“Assuming he loses his appeal in the Ethics Committee, Clyde said he’s prepared to file a lawsuit against Pelosi, Capitol Police and the House Sergeant at Arms to challenge the newly installed magnetometers and to fight for Second Amendment rights at the Capitol,” as reported by Fox News.
The irony is that when he side-stepped the Capitol metal detectors on Feb. 3rd and Feb 4th, he did so without any weapon being in his possession.
“Clyde says when he bypassed the metal detectors, he wasn’t trying to bring a gun in. In fact, he was unarmed because he hadn’t even gotten his permit to carry in DC yet,” Fox News reported.
“When he does, however, he’d like to carry on the House floor and hopes his potential lawsuit can pave the way. He says members of Congress should feel safe having armed colleagues around them.”
“I love to carry everywhere I possibly can that it is legal. We should be able to carry on the House floor, and the Democrats should have no fear of that whatsoever,” he reportedly said.
He meant it too. Earlier this month he delivered an impassioned speech on the House floor decrying the Democrats’ latest gun control stunt.

“These Democrat efforts are part of their larger radical and shameful ploy to slowly chip away at the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens,” he said.
“As a federal firearms licensee by trade, I remain staunchly opposed to any effort that abridges our god-given Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, those inalienable rights recognized by the Constitution.”
He added that the bills Democrats have proposed, H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446, wouldn’t reduce access to guns for criminals.
“My Democrat colleagues are naive to think that criminals are suddenly going to rush to the closest firearms dealer to buy a gun,” he said.
