Country music icon gets COVID 4 days after second shot – but says he’d get vaccinated again in a heartbeat

Country music legend Larry Gatlin of the Gatlin Brothers band said he tested positive for COVID-19 after receiving a two-shot vaccine regimen, but he’s not concerned and would get vaccinated again.

In an interview with Fox News host Jon Scott on Saturday, Gatlin, 72, mused that he had gone nearly the entire year since the pandemic began without contracting the virus but wound up getting it following his vaccination.

“What are the odds?” Gatlin said.

The eldest member of the chart-topping band confirmed that he had gotten his second dose of the Moderna vaccine on March 4, but that he found out on March 8 following a rapid test that he was positive for the virus. A second test confirmed the infection.

“In my case, it was no more than a very mild chest cold for a couple of days, ran a little bit of fever,” Gatlin explained. “If I had it to do over again, I want the Moderna folks and everybody else to know I’d get right there in that line and go do it” again.

He went on to say that he and his wife, Janice, have been in self-quarantine at their Nashville home.

“I’m one of those, you know, who did not have a very bad case of it at all,” Gatlin continued, joking that he and fellow country star John Rich have “tour bus road immunity.”

“If you can hang out in a tour bus with a bunch of musicians for thirty years, 200 times a year, you’re pretty much immune to anything,” he added.

The country and gospel singer acknowledged that the pandemic, generally, “has been a trying time for all of us,” and that many Americans have suffered far more from the virus.

Gatlin went on to explain that he and his brothers had not performed much at all — like other entertainers — over the past year, as venues remained closed due to bans on large gatherings.

And while he indicated he personally is not suffering financial hardship, he knows that entertainment industry workers are.

“The thing is, the people who pop the popcorn, the people who take the tickets, the ushers, the people who work backstage at these venues — they’re the ones who are also suffering,” he said.

“I know that the essential workers, thank God for them, the doctors and nurses, people who have done everything and sacrificed everything, they are essential workers,” he continued, adding that entertainers like him who operate in venues that provide jobs for others are also “essential.”

Beginning earlier this month, states began reopening after months of COVID restrictions that have decimated local businesses, emptied office buildings and destroyed millions of jobs.

Gatlin praised those states and their governors, such as Greg Abbott in Texas and Ron DeSantis in Florida, while also acknowledging that “in desperate times, desperate measures are called for.”

However, he also cautioned about perpetual restrictions on civil liberties.

“There’s another old saying, C.S. Lewis wrote one time, he said, of all tyrannies imposed by government on the people, the one imposed for the people’s own good is the most oppressive,” Gatlin added.
