Media mum on Portland Antifa violence as Mayor Wheeler seeks police funding to curb shootings

Antifa extremists are once again wreaking havoc in Portland, Oregon, not that anyone in the mainstream press outside of Fox News and the New York Post seem to care.

As of Saturday, neither CNN, The New York Times nor The Washington Post had written a single word — not one — about this week’s riots in the left-wing utopia.

The Associated Press meanwhile had published one report about the matter. But unlike its legion of lengthy stories about the Jan. 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol, the news agency’s story about the Portland insurrection contained fewer than 100 words.

And yes, what happened in Portland this week was an insurrection, as noted Friday night on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” by Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

“Don’t call it a violent white supremacist insurrection,” he sarcastically said, “but last night in Portland, Oregon, a group of angry white people attacked a federal courthouse and set it on fire. Of course, they were from Antifa, so it doesn’t count.”

Indeed, to the media it clearly doesn’t count, never mind that there were reportedly people still inside the courthouse when the far-left Antifa extremists set fire to it.

What wasn’t known at the time of the riot Thursday evening was why the Antifa extremists had exploded in rage once again for the umpteenth time.

But by Friday, the reasons behind the unrest were known, and according to Carlson’s guest, journalist Jason Rantz of Seattle radio station KTTH, they were as convoluted as you’d expect from the nation’s most notorious liberal utopia.

“The mayor of Portland has decided to put more funding or try to get more funding to the police department that they defunded. They got rid of the gun violence reduction team, and since then there’s been a rash of deadly shootings. They’re on pace to have another historic year,” he told Carlson.

Local station KGW reported this week that Portland’s already been hit with almost 200 shootings and over a dozen murders this year. While not as bad as the numbers out of the liberal utopia of Chicago, they’re still pretty close.

In response to this uptick in crime, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler announced Thursday that he’d like to use $2 million to establish a violence prevention program that, as noted by Oregon Public Broadcasting, would perform the “same functions” as the Gun Violence Reduction Team that was disbanded last year.

This move angered the city’s extremists. But there’s more.

“On top of that, on Monday night the federal government took down the boards and the fencing around the federal courthouse, which meant Antifa now had a reason to go ahead and attack it again,” Rantz explained to Carlson.

“So they quickly tried to put up those boards before the Antifa violence [resumed], [but] the Antifa members showed up, took them all down, burned them and caused the traditional amount of chaos that they do.”

The worst part, according to Rantz, is the media’s treatment of this riot. While local media outlets have at least been covering it, they’ve apparently been gaslighting the public.

“In Portland, like so many other cities where this happens, the media there for the most part are calling riots ‘demonstrations,’ and they’re calling domestic terrorists simply ‘protesters,'” Rantz told Carlson.

This prompted the Fox News host to sarcastically ask, “So did hundreds of federal agents swoop in, grab everybody’s cell phone, throw hundreds into prison, shoot unarmed people in Portland as they tried to burn a courthouse?”

What he’d alluded to was how federal authorities had acted during and after the Jan. 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol — which, unlike Portland’s riot, had been committed by right-wing extremists, not the media’s beloved left-wing extremists.

Rantz responded in the negative.

“No, there was one arrest, which is rather instructive. … Because in Portland, like in Seattle and other places, police officers aren’t able to do their jobs,” he said.

Portland police reportedly set up a perimeter and detained more than 100 people Friday night, telling demonstrators that it was temporary and they would be escorted out “one at a time.” According to a KOIN reporter, police took photos of some of the protesters, though it was not clear why.

According to field journalist Brendan Gutenschwager, the rioting in Portland continued Friday evening, albeit apparently without any additional attacks on the courthouse.
