Sheriff: High-speed roads built to aid Border Patrol now serving cartels after Biden halted wall construction

An Arizona sheriff is railing against President Joe Biden’s order halting wall construction along the U.S.-Mexico border begun under the previous administration, saying the decision is helping smuggling cartels in unanticipated ways.

In particular, Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels said, cartels are now using the “high-speed” roads built in conjunction with the wall in order to allow the Border Patrol to more quickly patrol sectors.

“We just built roads for the cartels,” Dannels told the Washington Times, likening those roads to a smuggler’s highway.

Contractors built extended sections of road ahead of actual wall construction, so when Biden halted the operations, they were left exposed and have since been utilized to move illegal aliens and drugs faster and farther into the U.S., Dannels told the Times.

Dannels’ county stretches for 83 miles along the Mexico border, the report added.

In the weeks since Biden relaxed or repealed nearly all of former President Donald Trump’s immigration and border enforcement orders, there has been a new crush of migrants that lawmakers in both parties are calling a crisis.

“The numbers have been increasing,” Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) told Fox News Tuesday. “The number of unaccompanied kids, the number of families that are coming in are just increasing every day. In my district, just a couple of days ago, 166 people [crossed the border. … So it’s not a crisis yet, but it’s going to get there very soon.”

Texas GOP Rep. Michael McCaul also blasted Biden for reversing Trump’s policies.

“All the good we did in the last four years to stop illegal immigration is gonna be damaged within months,” he told Fox News in a separate interview.

Biden has also been criticized by former acting Customs and Border Protection chief Mark Morgan, who said earlier this week that his policies are actually putting more migrants — especially children — in danger.

Commenting on Trump’s speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday, Morgan said the former president was “spot-on” in discussing how “borders matter.”

“He was very clear and went through … line by line just how successful we were and how, in just a few weeks, the radical open border policies of this administration has eroded every single successful tool and authority we had,” Morgan said. “Now, they’re shocked that we see a crisis at our southern border.”

Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade responded by noting that some 13,000 unaccompanied minors from Central American countries are currently streaming towards the U.S.-Mexico border. Morgan noted that Biden’s policies brought back ‘catch-and-release’ so those minors, as well as illegal immigrant adults, will simply be processed and let go inside the country.

“The hypocrisy in our laws. If you’re an unaccompanied minor from Canada or Mexico, we send you back. It’s only from the non-contiguous countries from the Northern Triangle…we keep those kids,” Morgan said. “It makes no sense and that’s what we were addressing.”

Biden met with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Monday to discuss immigration and other issues. Morgan said that the Mexican leader should have pressed Biden on why he reversed Trump’s orders because that puts Mexico in a tough spot having to deal with new caravans.

“If I was the Mexican president, I would be calling Biden out on it,” Morgan said.
