Sen. Cotton rips Democrats over $1.9T COVID bill: ‘Talk about the swamp looking out after itself’

Sen. Tom Cotton blasted Democrats for catering to “the swamp” by pushing what he suggests is an unnecessary $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief measure as cases “plummet” around the country.

In an interview with “Fox & Friends” on Monday, the Arkansas Republican ripped the massive bill as mostly a payoff to the Washington “swamp” while adding that stimulus checks earmarked in the legislation mostly favor government bureaucrats over ordinary working-class Americans.

The bill calls for most Americans to receive a one-time payment of $1,400, but federal workers would reportedly get the same amount every week as long as their children’s schools continue to be closed.

Also, Cotton pointed out the bill contains $350 billion for “poorly-run” Democrat states like New York and California and provides healthcare subsidies to people in the U.S. illegally.

But mostly, Cotton suggested, Democrats and President Joe Biden want to quickly pass the expensive bill because the pandemic is waning and with it the urgency for action.

“One reason I think Joe Biden thinks there’s no time to waste is that Democrats can see cases have plummeted since early January,” he told Fox & Friends.

“They can see that we now have three effective vaccines, and vaccination rates are surging, so I think they’re worried they won’t have the coronavirus as an excuse to pay off all their clients and patrons in a $1.9 trillion blowout bill,” he continued.

“As you said, less than a dime of every dollar goes to coronavirus,” the Harvard-educated lawyer and former multi-combat tour Army infantry officer noted further.

“Just take a look at the payoff to some of their constituencies. $350 billion for states that are poorly run and that have longstanding problems but didn’t even lose money because of the coronavirus, places like California and New York,” Cotton said, adding that the bill also contains “$130 billion for schools but only a nickel of each dollar of that money is going to be spent this year.”

“Most of it is for future years. Again, paying off teachers’ unions. And then maybe the worst of all, the worst of all, they’re going to give a lot of Americans a $1,400 check,” he said. “Federal employers are going to get that same check. They are also going to get $1,400 a week, every single week if their kids aren’t in school.

“So if you’re working in the middle of the country, hard to make a living, you get one $1,400 payment once. If you’re a federal bureaucrat in Washington where your schools are still closed, you get it every single week. Talk about the swamp looking out after itself,” Cotton added.

The Arkansas Republican and ally of former President Donald Trump spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, giving a rousing speech and getting a standing ovation after accusing the Democratic left of hating the country they lead.

“We face many threats in this country, whether from China or Iran or Islamic terrorism, but there is no more pernicious threat to America than the rejection of our founding principles and our heritage and our tradition,” he said.

“Many on the left have concluded that America is a fundamentally flawed, irredeemable, wicked place,” Cotton, who hails from Little Rock, added. These radical liberals, they want to erase our history. They want to replace it with their crazy Marxist theories. They may say that it’s about the Civil War or racism. Don’t believe them.”
