U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), one of seven Republicans who voted to convict President Donald Trump in impeachment 2.0, has announced her opposition to the confirmation of Neera Tanden to direct the Office of Management and Budget in the Biden administration.
Despite her mostly RINO bona fides, the news of Collins’ decision to vote against Tanden has prompted a meltdown on liberal Twitter, with some even dredging up unfounded accusations against Justice Brett Kavanaugh that emerged during the-then judge’s contentious September 2018 confirmation hearings.
To her credit, even against the backdrop of her so-called moderate ideology, Collins’ influential speech in support of Kavanaugh likely was decisive in his ascendancy to the Supreme Court.
According to a statement released by Collins, “Neera Tanden has neither the experience nor the temperament to lead this critical agency. Her past actions have demonstrated exactly the kind of animosity that President Biden has pledged to transcend.”
Collins also was unsettled by Tanden scrubbing 1000-plus, often opinionated tweets shortly before she was nominated because it “raises concerns about her commitment to transparency.”
A few of those tweets were critical of Collins, one describing her as “the worst,” and another assailed her for her “terrible treatment” of Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford. Collins was reelected for another six-year term in Election 2020.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has already said he won’t vote for Tanden — who is currently president of the left-wing Center for American Progress think tank and a familiar cable news pundit — because of her prior “overly partisan statements” on social media that would create “a toxic and detrimental impact” if she was confirmed to head OMB.
The Biden administration is currently standing by the nominee, but confirmation appears doubtful in the 50-50 U.S. Senate.

According to Politico, however, RINOs Mitt Romney or Lisa Murkowski could potentially support the nominee in a power play “and save Tanden to show Manchin that he doesn’t actually run the Senate.”
Romney has subsequently indicated that he is a no vote on Tanden, however.
As alluded to above, woke and often profanity-spewing Twitter is outraged over Collins’ decision, again demonstrating that as a general principle, praise from the left for the RINO cohort is fleeting. Here is a just a small sampling of trending activity:
