Christie says Ted Cruz ‘not likable,’ has no sympathy over Cancun pile on because ‘he was making fun of me’

Chris Christie is implying that turnabout is fair play for Ted Cruz, who is being vilified and memed over his trip to Cancun amidst the winter storm disaster in Texas.

While acknowledging that the media loves to demonize Republicans for their miscues, Christie said “it’s hard to have sympathy for Ted Cruz,” who he said was experiencing a worse week than Andrew Cuomo, because the senator wouldn’t win any popularity contests. Ted Cruz “has just not been a very likeable guy.”

Sen. Cruz mocked Christie when the-then N.J. Gov. was famously caught sunbathing at Island Beach State Park in July 2017 during a government shutdown at a time when he and state legislators were unable to agree on a budget. The beach was closed to the public at the time.

In a discussion on the Guy Benson Show, Christie agreed with the Fox News Radio host that the media coverage of Cruz’s Cancun excursion has been way over the top.

But in some self-serving comments, he suggested that Cruz — his one-time 2016 presidential rival — bears some responsibility for the controversy.

“Listen, I have sympathy for anyone in public life with a family who faces those kind of really difficult decisions on a regular basis, and I faced them a couple of times when I was governor. And I made mistakes at times because I was thinking more like a father than about the full-time job that I had. So I have sympathy in that,” Christie explained.

“But I will tell you that, you know, it’s hard to have sympathy for Ted Cruz because, you know, Ted was right on board making fun of me back in 2017 when I had that incident on the beach. And that’s why I think you’re seeing piling on,” he added.

“And yes, in part, it’s because the media loves to pile on Republicans. That’s an element of it, Christie noted.

“But the other element of it is that Ted has just not been a very likeable guy. He has taken every chance he can to take shots at people on both sides of the aisle over the course of his career,” he continued. “And so when you do that, when you decide that’s what you want to do, and especially on personal matters, there’s not going to be a ton of people running to your defense.”

The Ted Cruz discussion starts at about the 40-minute mark:

As alluded to above, Christie may be still harboring hard feelings after Cruz made fun of him with a comment that he “should go back to beach” when the portly politician disparaged Cruz’s 2017 request for federal relief funding for the Lone State State after Hurricane Harvey.

“Payback’s a beach,” the New York Post quipped.

Both men have now been immortalized together in a Photoshop meme.
