‘Do your dishes, Hon’: GOP Rep. Boebert claps back at Dem whining about ‘dangerous’ guns during meeting

Freshman Rep. Lauren Boebert responded to a California Democrat’s taunts about her “gun fetish” after it appeared she had firearms on display behind her during a  Zoom call with members of the House Natural Resources Committee.

A “Fox News @ Night” segment Thursday evening began with a clip of Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) complaining about the Colorado Republican’s display of firearms visible behind her during the virtual hearing.

“If somebody wants to have a shrine to their gun fetish as a Zoom backdrop in their private life they can do that,” Huffman said. “But this is our hearing room and at some point, we’ll all start showing up in person and our safety and our ability to conduct business civilly without feeling threatened is a relevant consideration.”

Asked to respond, Boebert ripped “the left’s disdain for the Constitution,” which she said “was on full display” during the virtual committee meeting.

“Rather than have a productive debate about policy — I have more than 55 percent federal land in my district in Colorado — I wanted to talk about Democrats’ overreaching policies and their land grabs and closing off our beautiful rivers here in our district, but Democrats were too busy mocking the Constitution and disrespecting the everyday Americans that I was elected to represent,” Boebert said, claiming that the committee meeting, her first, was marred by insults from Democrats.

The GOP freshman has rankled Democrats with her vocal support for gun rights and for her ability to carry a concealed weapon while on Capitol grounds. In early January, just a few days before the Capitol riot, she successfully lobbied House leaders to uphold a 1967 exemption that allowed lawmakers to carry a weapon inside the U.S. Capitol.

“If Members can’t carry on Capitol grounds, they can’t protect themselves in D.C. while making their way to and from their offices to perform their official duties. The ‘last-mile’ transition of self-protection is critical. The current regulations provide transitional coverage once the Member is physically on campus,” she wrote in a letter that was signed by 83 returning and incoming Republican lawmakers.

Democrats had petitioned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to change the 53-year-old exemption.

Nevertheless, after the riot, Pelosi made a unilateral decision to install metal detectors at the entrances to the House chamber and implemented hefty fines for members who did not or refused to go through them.

During her interview, Boebert — who owns a gun-themed restaurant in her hometown of Rifle, Colo., where wait staffers are required to open-carry firearms — recounted that she has been under fire from Democrats and the Washington media since she won her November election.

“Just look at how I’ve been treated by the fake news and by creeps like Rep. Jared Huffman. He was literally looking like Jiffy Pop. He fashioned a tinfoil hat during my remarks,” she said, going on to accuse him and other Democrats of being the real “conspiracy theorists.”

Boebert went on to say she is “busy fighting against the left’s real fetish for power and stripping Americans of their constitutional rights.”

The Colorado Republican was then asked to respond to a tweet from another California Democrat, Rep. Katie Porter, who also complained about Boebert’s gun display.

“I always thought my dirty dishes piled up and accumulating bacteria were the most dangerous thing in a Zoom background,” Porter wrote with the hashtag #SafeStorage.”

“It’s kind of alarming that she has so many dishes in her sink collecting bacteria,” Boebert said. “Do your dishes, Hon.”

Boebert also pushed back on committee members considering a visual ban on firearms during hearings, asking Democratic Chairman Raul Grijalva of Arizona what other rights may be infringed.

“How about the Nineteenth Amendment? Can women vote in this committee?” she asked. “Why does anyone think that they can cherry-pick the Second Amendment and say this is the one enumerated right that we can take away from people?”

“Why stop with the Second Amendment?” she added. “Let’s go ahead and quarter soldiers in this committee room. There’s plenty of soldiers in the parking garage at ‘Fort Pelosi’ in Washington, D.C.”
