‘Recall Newsom’ campaign gets needed 1.5M signatures, ‘verification’ awaits to trigger special election

The closely watched grassroots effort to recall lockdown-loving Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom has reportedly compiled enough petition signatures to mandate a special election that could potentially oust the far-left Democrat from office. But organizers are seeking a large cushion of extra signatures to make sure that enough of them are deemed legally valid by the secretary of state to get over the line.

According to Recall Gavin 2020 spokesman Randy Economy, the effort has already surpassed the legally required 1.5 million signature plateau required by law to trigger an election in the state where Democrats control all levers of state government.

The goal is two million signees by March 17, 2021, however, based on an expectation that a certain percentage of them will be disqualified as invalid. Although Democrats frowned on signature verification during Election 2020, they will likely go over each signature on the recall petitions with a fine-tooth comb.

In praising the hard work of volunteers, Economy told Fox News that “We’re not there yet. We wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate the milestone along the way. But our job is not done. We’re working as hard as today as we were yesterday, and we’re going to work harder tomorrow.

Added lead proponent Orrin Heatlie, “We are going to continue working until the very end and we have run through the tape.”

If the recall goes forward, voters will be asked two questions. “Do they want to recall Newsom, yes or no? And, if more than 50% of voters say ‘yes,’ who should replace him?” If enough voters answer yes to the first question, the candidate with the most votes, no matter how fragmented the individual totals are, becomes governor.

If voters decide to keep Newsom in office, however, especially if no prominent Democrat jumps in to the contest, then the second question becomes moot.

The grassroots Newsom recall effort gained tremendous momentum after the governor, who imposed economy-crushing COVID-restrictions on his constituents, was caught violating his own stay-at-home rules by partying maskless an upscale eatery in northern California.

On its website, Recall Gavin 2020 — which is one of at least two groups seeking to unseat Newsom — declares that the governor “continues to destroy the lives and businesses of hardworking Californians. Help stop this tyrant before it’s too late.”

The ambitious Newsom likely has an eye on the White House in the future, but a successful recall would put an end to that aspiration. Prominent Republicans like ex-San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, and unsuccessful 2018 Newsom rival John Cox, have already thrown their hat in the ring. The state GOP has donated $125,000 to another organization, Recall California, to hire workers to gather additional signatures.

Author and filmmaker Mike Cernovich, an independent, is also running as a symbolic gesture to hold Newsome accountable for COVID-related “human rights violations.”

MAGA favorite Richard Grenell, the former ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence in the Trump administration, is reportedly considering entering the race to replace Newsom.

Grenell has the name ID and the communication skills, and probably has the fundraising potential, but it remains to be seen how his Trump connection would play in the blue state, especially with the corporate media in Newsom’s back pocket.
