Steve Hilton updates viewers on probe of COVID-19 origins, dangerous gain-of-function research

Fox News’ Steve Hilton, host of “The Next Revolution,” continued an investigation that links the coronavirus to a Wuhan, China lab, and U.S. funded gain-of-function research — billed by the liberal media as “a ridiculous conspiracy theory.”

This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and subcontracted to Wuhan, which Hilton points to as evidence of the “most likely” origins of COVID-19.

“The type of research is called gain-of-function virus research, because it aims to make existing viruses more dangerous and contagious — gain certain functions so that we can study them and better prepare our defenses,” he explained.

Hilton reminded viewers that the Obama administration put a moratorium on the controversial research after viruses escaped labs, but the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, led by Dr. Anthony Fauci, continued to fund the project with three payments totaling $1.8 million while the ban was in place.

He cited a 2017 paper detailing the work done in the Wuhan lab, before reminding viewers that former President Donald Trump’s deputy national security advisor, Matt Pottinger, privately told British officials that “a growing body of evidence supported the idea that the virus leaked from the Wuhan lab.”

And that Sir Richard Dearlove, former head of the British Secret Intelligence Service MI6, said the virus is “an engineered escapee from the Wuhan institute, I’m not saying anything other than the fact that… is was the result of an accident.”

There were also concerns about safety at the Wuhan lab, Hilton noted.

“The Chinese regime was so concerned about all evidence pointing to the Wuhan lab, that in February last year they replaced the head of the Wuhan Institute of Virology with the head of their bioweapons program. Vital  evidence was destroyed as NBC News reported the other week,” Hilton said, before running a clip of that report.

“Despite all this overwhelming circumstantial evidence,” he continued, “over a year has gone by without any serious investigation to this lab leak hypothesis.”

Hilton said even in America, scientists have been afraid to speak out because they are worried they will have their funding cut “or be accused of pushing conspiracy theories.”

But that appears to be changing, he said, pointing to a Washington Post editorial than ran Friday, covering “every key point in the pieces that we have broadcast over last two weeks.”

The Fox News host shared a quote from Dr. David Relman, an esteemed professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University: “…one thing that investigators really need to do is to go to the laboratory in Wuhan, and say: ‘We absolutely need to look at everything in your freezers, all of the records of what was in your freezers, all of the data that you collected over the recent years, and including sequence information on any sample you already looked at.'”

Hilton shared a tweet from Peter Daszak, whom he has identified as the person who subcontracted the gain-of-function research to Wuhan, saying after a recent visit to the lab that all important questions have been asked.

“Why isn’t anyone asking the head of NAIAD, Dr. Fauci, any of these questions, he is barely off the airwaves these days,” Hilton said, before highlighting the favorable media coverage Fauci gets, to include how he starts his day.

“Do you think we might also be told why, despite the ban that was in place at the time, our own government funded the research that looks like it led to the worst global catastrophe in a hundred years and whether we’re still funding it?” Hilton asked.

Displaying a statement from the NIH denying it funded the gain-of-function research, Hilton concluded by asking why no one from the institute will come on the show and answer his questions.

“We will not stop until we get these answers. Not to point fingers or blame anyone, but so we learn lessons that can help prevent the next pandemic,” he said.
