Mahomes’ mama blasts NFL officials, tweets smack-talk to Brady bride Gisele after Super Bowl loss

The mother of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took to Twitter Sunday, following her son’s 31-9 Super Bowl loss to the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to blast the NFL officiating crew as well as take a slight shot at Gisele Bündchen, Brady’s supermodel wife.

“If you have to have the ref on your team is that really winning!!! @giseleofficial lol,” Randi Mahomes, 44, wrote.

Her complaint appeared to be more with the officials instead of Bündchen.

But the Mahomes matriarch also channeled some fans’ reactions to what they saw as outsized calls against the Chiefs.

Later, Randi Mahomes wrote in defense of her son, “Love our chiefs!! Heartbroken to see how @espn @SportsCenter tried making fun of my son. But i know his heart and love for his team and chiefs nation! Thank you chiefs fans.. don’t forget these are someone’s sons tv.”

And she also praised Tom Brady’s mother.

However, other users online defended the officiating and instead criticized the Chief QB’s mom for her posts.

The initial tweet came after several controversial calls involving Chiefs players, some of which kept the Buc’s drives alive and led to scores on the team’s way to a Super Bowl LV route of the defending champion Chiefs 31-9.

One involved an unsportsmanlike conduct call against Chiefs cornerback Tyrann Mathieu. After a play, Mathieu appeared to say something to Brady and then walk away; Brady pursued Mathieu and jawboned him, but it was Mathieu who drew the 15-yard penalty and a warning from officials that his next offense would lead to ejection.

Another questionable call centered on Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who was flagged for pass interference against Buccaneers wideout Mike Evans. The spot-foul resulted in a 34-yard pick up for the Bucs and set up Brady for his third touchdown pass of the game, putting Tampa Bay up 21-6 at the half.

Earlier in the game with the Bucs up 7-3, Mathieu intercepted a Brady pass but the play was negated by “a somewhat weak holding call against Charvarius Ward,” The Spun reported. The reversal set Brady up for a TD pass to his favorite tight end Rob Gronkowski.

And on Tampa Bay’s last possession before half time, Mathieu was again penalized, this time for defensive pass interference on a pass that appeared uncatchable, which would have otherwise negated the call. In addition, replay did not show a lot of contact.

But the penalty resulted in a first-and-goal on the one-yard-line; Brady and the Bucs punched it in for a score.

During the halftime show, CBS Sports football analyst and former quarterback Boomer Esiason summed up what a lot of fans were likely feeling when he said “the referees are way too involved” in the game.

“I kind of feel like the referees are way too involved here. They’re throwing too many flags that are leading to points for Tampa Bay,” Esiason said.

“I agree with you when it comes to these flags,” fellow analyst and former NFL wide receiver Nate Burlson added. “It’s heavily imbalanced. You have to go out there and let these guys play a little bit. If I’m the referees, I treat this like the 90s in the NBA playoffs. Let them be a little physical, stop throwing the laundry out on the field.”

The Chiefs were penalized eight times for 95 yards during the first half, though some calls — especially for defensive holding — appeared legitimate.

The victory gives the Bucs their second franchise Super Bowl win.
